Silver Belt Mine. We visited the Silver
Belt, on Saturday, expecting to witness tbeir
first experimental smelting the rich ore of that
mine bnt, owing to a fall arc in the coal supply,
were doomed to disappointment, and owing to a
stoppage of work In tbe mine pending tbc crec
tlon of tbe furnace and preparations for smelt
ing, tbe shaft bad filled with water over two seU
of timbers, which caused another disappointment
in not being able to explore tbe mine in Its sub
terranean depths, where we were assured it bad
vastly increased in size over the surface strata by
tbe consolidation of several scams or feeders.
Being confined then to an examination of the
dump, which wc found assorted into three class
cs, we set ourselves to work with tbc air of an
Asbburner, a Jan In or a Kustel, to estimate the
value of the deposit by the product of its work
ing sbalt, and concluded that tbc only requisite
to insure" it a place In tbc Sau Francisco Stock
Board with an aggregate selling value of mil
lions, Is a certainty that there Is a plenty of It.
The quality Is no longer a question, and we trust
further development may prove tbe quautlty to
be equally satisfactory. They have out about
fifty tons of ore procured In sinking a sunn
seventy feet on the ledge. This ore varies more
In richness than In the character of the metal it
carries, and Mr. George llogle, a practical assay,
cr and mineralogist, who has charge of the work,
as well as Mr. Brown, an old silver smelter, con
fidently believe that there Is nothing In its chem
ical combination to prevent its being smelted
without difficulty. Tbc ores, so far as can be
Judged without analysis, are sulphurets of sliver
in combination with galena and a trace of anti
mony. Yet there are seams all through tbe rock
and little pockets filled with what appears to be
chloride of lead, but upon collecting aud wash
ing it Is found to contain considerable quanti
ties of mctallc sliver. A small furnace with a fan
blower to be run by horse-power is erected and
lined with a flrc-clay found in the mine and
mixed with quartz tailings. Wo shall watch
with considerable anxiety for the result of their
experimental run, which wc expect to hear from
in a day or two.
Scene in as Arizona. Forest. " In the dark
ling wood amid the cool and silence," where "the
gray old trunks that high In heaven mingle their
mossy boughs and sway their green tops," Geo.
W. Curtis bath bullded him ft mill, and there
where tbe God of Nature hath woven a verdant
roof of the branches of these fair ' ranks of trees
invoked tbc power or steam and Ingenuity of man
to convert Ibc " forest primeval" into shingles,
shakes, boards, scantling, plank, mouldings and
in fact everything In the buldlug line that can be
made of wood. Dressed lumber, especially rus
tic siding, matched flooring and ceiling will be
made a speciality at this establishment. Read
his advertisement.
Bradsiiaw. E. Fender is in from Bradshaw
where he has been at work on the wheel of Luke,
Colyer fc Co., which is to run a 5-stamp battery.
It will be fii.libed iu about three weeks, after
which Mr. F. will begin the erection of a 10-starup
mill or his own on Turkey Creek, tbe battery of
the old Bully Bucno mill having been secured
for the purpose. The mill when completed will
worK ore from the Bully Bucno mine.
Postmaster Charles Kootz, while at work lu bis
field, a mile from Bradsbaw City, one day last
week, was attacked by four largo wolves, und
whipped and drove them away with a shovel.
Goons Arrived During tue Week. For C.

pounds general merchandise. For Ashcr & Co.,
by C. W. Beach's teams 1.316 pounds, by H. M.
Castanada's 3.G29, by Joaquin Arvlsa's 1.000, by
H. A. Wilson's 1,832 pounds total, ,7SG pounds.
Dry goods. For W. M. Buflura, 21,000 lbs. gen
eral merchandise, by W. II. Greenup's train.
For L. Bashford & Co., 40,000 pounds, by W. II.
Greenup's train, consisting of general merchan
dise. Including a splendid assortment of hats and
clocks. Kelly & Stephens received a large lot
of parlor ornaments, whips, cte.
Success at Last. Uupley & Crum have been
experimenting for some time iu an effort to find
water at a place known as Tonto Springs, be
tween here and Skull Valley, by sinking wells on
the flat, but without success. One well 70 and
another 40 feet deep failed to rench anything but
dry rocks and sand. So they adopted a new
plan, went to tho springy place on the hill side
and ran in a cut some 10 feet long, ten feet wide
and ten feet deep, which has so far incrcasod the
flow as to afford about 120 gallons per hour,
which is led in pipes some half-mile to the sta
tlon. See their advertisement.
Eiohtt dollars per thousand for making rails
would seem an exorbitant price, when we take
Into consideration the case or the Montana mnn
making money on a coutract of splitting rails,
one-half for the other, on Government land, but
Lindsay says, when you come to pound half a
day on an iron wedge that cost a dollar a pound
In gold, before you get it fairly Imbedded In a
log, use up nil the adjacent timber in the
neighborhood for gluts, sit down and cuss two
hours, and then have to consume the balance or
tbe day In chopping out tho wedge, you can
very conveniently lose about 55 a day at it.

BIG BUG.
As mentioned elsewhere, we with Mr. Frank
Murray visited Big Bug Creek, on Sunday last,
ana took a look at some or tbe mines, tbe mill
ditches, etc., belonging to the Company rcpre
sented by Chas. E. Hitchcock, and were 6ome
what astonished to find evidences of a larger
amount of work having been done there than we
had supposed, in tbe then dangerous condition
of the couutrj-, it was possible to accomplish be
fore General Crook and bis brave command had
quieted tbe Indians. The Big Bug mine, Euge
nia, and some others located too near the top of
the mountain to beguile us into climbing up to
tee them were not visited, but tbe Isabella,
named for tbe youngest daughter of Mr. II., we
found located conveniently to the bugcy road
and selected it for examination. This is not a
large lode nor extraordinarily rich, butisadmi
rably situated for being worked chcaplj-, and Is
well opened on the surface for nearly a hundred
feet In all, besides having a shaft down 25 feel in
one place, at the bottom of which the vein is
about three leel wide. A ditch has been brought
ento the lode and several tons of pay ore ground-
sluiced out and piled up ready to be sent down
on a tramway to the Creek, where the battery
from the Big Bug mill will be set up, and run by
water from the ditch, to crush It. Mr. Hitchcock
informed us that in sluicing out the ore now on
hand, they saved lrom f 12 to 518 pur day in free
gold to tbc band, which is sufficient evidence of
the value of tbc vein matter, aside from what may
be in tbe rock itself. The Isabella runs parallel
with tbe Eugenia and dips into tbc mountain
towards the other, is of the same character of
ore, and as the Eugenia Is a perpendicular ledge,
it Is believed that at a depth of several hundred
feet they come together and form one ledge, or
in other words, that the Eugenia Is the ledge and
tbe Isabella a spur. They have crushed some
seven or eight thousand tons from the Eugenia,
with good results, but it is quite inaccessible on
account of its great elevation, and if it can be
reached through the Isabella it would greatly fa
cilitate its working aud render it much more
profitable.
Returning to the Hitchcock residence near the
mill, wc were treated to an excellent lunch, and
found as pleasant and intelligent a family as one
would meet in visiting one in ten thousand even
in San Francisco or anywhere else. Mrs. H. is a
ludy of culture and refinement, fit to grace a pal
ace, and her daughters, though they have been
chiefly brought up in tbc wilds of Arizona and
understand handling horses and cattle, and can
estimate the value of n sample of ore at sight
equal to nn old expert, nevertheless show evi
dences of a mother's careful training, aud appear
as well in the parlor as city belles minus pale
checks and delicate health, the usual accompani
ments of too carcfel exclusion from the lifegiv-
ng sun-sbiuc and atmosphere of heaven.
High up in a gorge of tho mountain they are
cultivating a kitchen garden, each has a borctc of
her own aud no, thanks to anyone for putting
him iu condition for a gallop up the rugged
steeps to where they spend an hour or two each
day In digging up weeds, training vines and pre
paring for a supply of fresh healthy mountain
vegetables for their owu table. But wc have not
time nor space to do justice to the wood-nimph
life of these two "mountain maids" thau whom
no bird Is freer nor 6ong sweeter than the echos
they awaken from crag to crag lu these grnud old
solitudes. Our traveliug companion being a
much younger man and consequently more Im
pressible and susceptablc to romantic surround-
ugs and influences than onc'at our time of life is
upposcd to be, became so infatuated with Big
Bug that our powers of persuasion were well
tiigb exhausted iu prevailing upon him to leave
in time to reach home before nightfall.
Arizouans are proverbial lor their hospitality,
but wc venture nothing in saying that a more
pleasant p!acc to visit, or a more agreeable and
intelligent family docs not exist within the bor
ders of the Territory than that of Chas. E. Hitch
cock of Big Bug.
Si'auldinq's Station. We have several times
taken occasion, on the authority of others, to
speak of the comfortable station Henry Spaul
ding and his excellent lady have established at
the junction of tbe Prescott and Verde road with
tiiat leading down tbe Agua Fria in the direction
of Bowers' Ranch, Silver Belt, Big Bug, etc., but
had never until Saturday last visited the country
or enjoyed the hospitalities of the place in per
son, but now, when we mention the superior ac
commodations of this comfortable hostelry we
talk by the card, and know whereof wc speak.
Every possible convenience that "can be thought
of, or merchant, mechanic or auctioneer bought
of," has been and is being added from time-to
time to the already complete appointments of
the place, until it is really a cosy home for the
traveler, and n delightful resort for those in
search of the means to enjoy a Sunday's recrea
tion from the tolls of tbc week in town. The dis
tance Is only twelve miles, the road good, aud
6ccnery by the way beautiful and Interesting.
Tbe host and hostess understand the secret of
providing for tbc comfort of their guests; then,
in tbe language of America's greatest poet, there
is
"Between the dark and tbe daylight,
When night is beginning to lower,
A pause in the day's occupations
That it known as the children's hour.
And if we failed in this uotice to mention the
two little pets of this household, Ida and Emma,
we should be derelict of duty and ungrateful for
a real pleasure we enjoyed in their cunning
and innocent prattle. Ida is a year the older but
they are often taken for twins, and the heart of
tbc old maid or old bachelor that is not moved
towards them is too sour 'to enjoy the innocent,
the beautiful and tbc good of this world, and
ought to leave It to make room for those who
can. We repeat that tboee wbo are confined du
ring tbc week in offices, stores and shops and
need a ride or drive in the fresh air on Sunday or
any other day for that matter, will find a good
road, beautiful scenery, healthy exercise and num
ber one accommodations by taking a jaunt to the
Agua Fria and stopping at Spaulding's.

LIFE IS Sweet. Tho blood is tho life of the human
system. Keep it pure and all is well; for this purpose no
standard medicine has had so uniform and amazing
success as Dr. Henley's Celebrated I. X. L. Hitters. Th's
is a pure stimulant, medicated with the finest tonics and
alteratives which the vegetable kingdom affords; nnd is
the only preparation at present known which thoroughly
meets the emergenoy. The effect of this popular restora
tive is continuous. Each dose taken invigorates the vital
energies and the brain, and its prolonged use will nn
qucsiionaWy cure any case of debility, or mental torpid
ity that does not arise from organic causes beyond the
rench t.f medicine. It is in the strictest sense- of tbe word,
an invigorating nnd regulating cordial. If the nerves are
tremulous nnd relaxed, it braces them ; if the liver is tor
pid it promotes acti vity in that organ ; tbe appetite is poor
and digestion a slow and painful operation, it creates a
relish for food nnd enables the stomach to convert it into
healthful aliment. Moreover, it is a specific for a large
number or ailments, somo of which are particularly prev
alent in the damp and chilly nenther which we so often
experience in mid-winter. Among these may be men
tioned rheumatism, chills nnd fever, nnd all tbe morbid
conditions of the d'gestive organs. By Insuring perfect
digestion and a proper flow of bile, it insures poor blood,
a vigorour circulation, nnd the prompt discbarge of all
waste matter from the system. myS8ml
