Populists and Democrats Unite on ths Same WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 19)2 Ticket In Kansas. e-crB3C2X2,x,xc23I ne Year 51.00 six Jiontns jio 'loree Months v PAINTER & HERR, Publishers, TELEPHONE SO. 50. '-Official Paper of Barter County. PEOPLES PARTY CONVENTION. A delegate convention of the People's Party of Barber countytts hereby called to meet at the court house In Vlediciu Lodge on Saturday, -July 12, 1902. at 11 o'clock for the purpose of taking action relative to a county ticket. The basis of representation will be one dele Kale for every ten votes and major fraction thereof can for Hon. J. W. Breidenthal for governor in llKR) and one delegate at large from each precinct. Under this apportion ment precincts will be entitled to the foil jw- i ing representation: Aetna 2 Lake City 5 Cedar 6 1 Medicine Lodge 18 Deerhead .....31 Mlngona 3 Dry Creek 2 Moore 4 Elm Mills.... 4 McAdoo 3 Elwood 5 NipDRwalla 4 t Hazelton 7 Sharon 3 i Kiowa 12 J Sun City 6 -Lockard 3 1 Turkey Creek 5 I Valley 5 Total .....100 Necessary to choice . .51 It la recommended that township primaries ' be held on Thursday, July 10. or at such time and place as may be designated by the town ship committee. It is also urged that township tickets be Dominated at these primaries, and we particu larly urge that township committees consist ing of tnree in each township, be elected to serve during the ensuing year. U. C. Herr, Chairman. ' F. R. fl ayes, 8ec'y. A fellow up in Leavenworth coun ty committed suicide last week on ac count of King Edward's condition. Good enough. A fool of that kind is 'better off dead than alive. Ciiaiioian Crouse or the democrat county committee requests us to ure every democrat in the 00.111 ty to attend the couyentiontion on July 12th. This is a mnss convention and every demo crat in the county is entitled to a vote. Both the Kiowa Journal and the Cresset are very certain that the Inde pendent ticket has already been "fix ed but the joke of it is that each pa per has a different slate. Better get to gether, bovs, or the public will put you down as fakirs. Ik the republicans are wise they will declare the election off this fall again and have the legislature and courts come to their aid. "Fire" the populists aud democrats who hold office and let the republicans hold oyer. It worked like a charm last year. Why not this year? The machine organ says the dele gates from Barber county at the Popu list convention at Topeka last week voted agaist the naming of a Populist ticket. That 13 a plain straightout lie. The Barber county delegates voted for the nomination of an entire Peonies party ticket, which was nominated and regularly recorded. PoruLisTs and democrats all over the county should remember that the committee division of the places be tween the two parties is only adyisory and merely In the nature of a recom mendation. The conventions on the 12th will be a law unto themselves and their power is unlimited. Go to your primaries and have your say. We submit that ,the Cresset is not a sood prophet in the matter of fusion nominations. A few weeks ago that i paper said that Billie Uaun might as well go away back and sit down be- - cause he has no'chance to get the nom ' ination. Now it says that he has a cinch. The Cresset might as well quit, ilt will have to change its guess from - week to week and that will rum any prophet's reputation. You can't come any way near on guessing on the result of a populist or democratic convention. In those parties every man is his own thinker and every voter is a sovereign. The Index dees not claim to know how the people of the whole state of Kansas feel on the question of snap judgment legislation, but we feel free to say that here in Barber county it doesn't work. We had a little test case of it last fall and on election day the YOters sat down on it good and hard. We have an idea that same indignation will be expressed over the whole state next Noyember. Just think of the out Tageofalaw that denies a political party of the right to nominate a good man for a responsible office simply be muse another party had recognized him as a man of virtue and worth! It would be no greater outrage to deny an individual the right to vote for a man who does not happen to be a member of the political organization with which the voter himself affiliates. Call on the City Meat Market for all kinds of fresh and cured meats, fish, oysters, kraut, potatoes, etc. The Populists and Democrats of Kansas nominated the following ticket at Topeka last week: Supreme Justice, two year term, John C. Cannon, Mound City. (Dem.) Supreme Justice, four year term. 1 rank Doster, Marion, (Pop.) Supreme Justices, six year term, J. D. McCIeverty, Fort Scott. (Dera.), Ed S. Waterbury, Emporia, (Pop ), B. F. Milton, Dodge City, (Pop.) Congressman -at-Large, J. D. Botkin, WinfieM, (Pop.) Governor, W. H Craddock, Kansas City, Kans., (Dem.) Lieutenant Governor, Fred J. Close, Ellis, (Pop.) Secretary of State, Claude Duvall, Hutchinson, (Dem.) Treasuier, D. II. Hefflebower, Paola, (Pop.) Auditor, J. M. Lewis, Kinsley, (Pop.) Attorney General, F. M. Pearl, Hia watha, (Pop.) Superintendent, F. C. Powell, Nick- ersou, (Pop.) Superintendent of Insurance, Daniel Hart, Norton, (Pop.) Each party filed its nominations with the secretary of state and it will be ud to him under the disfranchising law enacted by the republican party to denv the Peoples ticket a place on the offi cial ballot. As soon as he makes a de cision a mandamus action will be in. stituted in the supreme court and the constitutionality of the law will be tested. This will reauire some tim and, since the court and secretary of state are under republican control, the case may not be reached before elec tion. A political party that will legis late away the rights of a voter is above nothing In the way of cunning and trickery. The convention was a tremendous gathering of intelligent and sincere men. All realized that they were vie tims of a piece of outrageous legisla tion, their rights had been taken away from them and the question of method was debated at length. Two plans were discussed. One was to nominate only a part of the ticket, thus having a zig-zag ticket on the ballot, each hav ing its own heading', and each partly tilled, while the other was to both nom inate the same ticket and put it up to the republican officers to steal their rights. ' There was no middle-of-the road sen timent. The Populist convention did this year the same as it has done in former years. They united with the democrats as usual. They did not surrender to any other political organization and if their ticket does not appear on the bal lot it will be because of a republican gag law. The convention was rather stormy but our excellent chairman, Hon. S. I. Hale, of Rush county, held it well m check and every delegate who so desir ed made his speech. It seemed to' us that the only delegates who did not ad dress the convention were those from Barber county. The debate was so ve hement and prolonged that the work of the convention was not concluded un til 1 o'clock, Wednesday morning. The platform appears on one of our inside pages. It has the proper ring. Every Kansan can stand on it. GETTING RIGHT. For once in its existence, the Cresset has come out manfully and admitted thatjit was wrong in the Turner social istic controversy. When Lynn Turner was nominated for county attorney of Pratt county by the republican party, the Index noted it, purely as a news item, and we recalled his identification with the socialists while here. Follow ing this, the Cresset jumped onto us in this way: "The Index, as usual, is wrong. Mar vin Turner, brother to L. G., has been and we think still is a socialist. Marvin Turner has made socialist speeches in this county. However, L. G. Turner, to the best of our knowledge, has al ways been and still is a straight repub lican. The Index should correct the statement, as it might Injure Mr. Tur ner's candidacy In a county where the paper is not well known." Following this, the Index again stat ed that Mr. Turner was a socialist and submitted quotations from his old Bar ber county neighbors in evidence, and last week the Cresset came out In the following frank admission: "The senior editor of the Cresset de sires to frankly acknowledge that the Index was correct in stating that Lynn lurner was at one time allied with the socialists of Barber county. He deemed his extended acquaintance with Lynn and Marvin Turner justified him tn ex pressing an opinion. We hope this will be accepted as amende honorable." Thanks, very much, for the candor.
