Ezra Read celebrated hh tenth birth day on Tuesday of last week by invit ing in fourteen of bis boy playmates. Icecream and cake constituted the refreshments. G. F. Guthrie and wife are entertain ing T. S. Gaitskill and wife of Labette county. They arrived on Wednesday night of last week. Mesdames Guthrie and Gaitskill are sisters. Miss Gertrude Stevens returned to Wichita last Wednesday where she is making her home at present with Mrs. C. Q Chandler. Miss Altne Dotaon accompanied her and will visit In that city a few week. The infant child of Aubry and Min nie Donovan died on June 28th of cholera Infantum. The little girl was about seven months old. The bereaved parents have the sympathy of the en tire community. Sears is inclined to believe that the new railroad is being built for his especial accommodation. He has a string of relatives on or near the new system all the way from Kingfisher to near Dodge City and the new road will give him a chance to visit all of them for about $7 50. Heretofore a com- plete visit would have cost him no less than $50. Prof. D. W. Major has been re em ployed as superintendent of the Medi cine Lodge schools. Froman begins this week to tear down his old blacksmith shop to give way for a new con crete building. Work has begun on the big cut on the new railroad in the south part of town. Some steel is also being laid west of the city. Percival Potter of Kiowa attend ed the common school graduating exercises in this city Saturday night. He was a member of the class a year ago. The county commissioners will meet as a board of levy the first Mondaj in August. The city mayor and council will make, the city levy at the same time. The board could not rom- plete their abstract of valuations because five of the counties had not made their returns, but they heard Messrs. Lake and Wilson and gave them some encouragement. The Barber county board feels that the state has fixed too high a valuation on Barber county compared with the surrounding counties and they are asking for a reduction of at least ten per cent.
