BAKBER COUNTY INDEX. NOTICE OF DC DC 3( )C DC DC DOOC WEDNESDAY. APRIL, 13, 1910. U. C. HBRR Editor Painter & Herr, Publishers TELEPH05E Medicine Lodge No. 50 Ranchmens No. 41 One Tear .-. fLOO Six Months. .50 Three Months .25 OEcial Paper of Bailer Comfy ANNOUNCEMENTS CLIRK Or THE DISTRICT COCRT. I hereby announce my candidacy for the nomination for the office of Clerk of the Dis trict Court, subject to the will of the Demo crats of Harbor county to be expressed at the primary election August 2, 1910. A. W. SMITH. CLIRK OF TFIE DISTRICT COCRT To the people of Barber County: I am a candidate for rennmlnatlon for the oiflce of Clerk of the District Court, subject to the ac tion of the Republican voters at the primary election August 2nd, and If nominated, will be frateful for the votes of men of all parties, elfevinir. as 1 do, that my record la the office fotitles me to a second teim. ROBT. S. CRANE. W. M. Gfcnn of Greeley county is the "machine" candidate for lieutenant governor. He is a cousin of Postmaster H. E. Glenn of Kiowa. Kansas City has again returned to the republican fold. Police interference and the negro vcte were the elements that won the victory. Kansas City has 6, 500 negro voters. President Taft, according to published reports, cancelled his appointment in Indiana, reconsidered it and reconsidered the reconsideration all in a space of three days last week. The provocation was the attitude of the Indiana republicans toward insurgency. Congressman McKinlay has left Kan sas and gone to Washington with the re port thai Kansas is hopelessly insurgent. The republican congressional committee thereupon had a conniption fit and de cided to send out Congressman Burton of Ohio, the eloquent standpatter. The Aldrich-Cannon-Taft combination seems determined to force it down the throats of Kansas people in spite of their protests. Secretary of State Denton is becom ing fierce in his old davs. He wants the next legislature to enact a law mak ing non-partisan municipal elections im possible. Several democrats were elect ed to city offices throughout the state in last week's municipal elections and it seems to stine the old man. If his idea is carried out to the extreme limit it will not be long until we'll have a law making it a felony to vote anything but republican ticket. Old Denton is surely in his dotage. There were the usual number of sur prises in last week's municipal elections. The principal one was the election of Seidel, socialist, in Milwaukee, by an overwhelming plurality. In Topek Billard was elected over Green. Billard is a radical anti-prohibitionist,a member of the Topeka Club and a bitter enemy of Uov. otubbs and his administration. It is beginning to look like Gov. $tubbs and prohibition are both going down ward all on account of too much "grandstand," insincerity and political chicanery all along the line. Genuine temperance and peanut politics can not mix. Now, How About This? The packers are protected by a tariff on tneir products ot Z cents per pound on dressed beef and 4 cents per pound on hams and bacon. Presumably that tariff was put on to protect them from foreign cheap labor. An investigation made a few months ago showed that American dressed meats were being sold cheaper in London than in New York. The foreigner was being fed cheaper than the citizens here at home. Loins were quoted at from 1 5 to 18 cents in London and at 23 to 28 cents a pound in New York. Round steak was quoted at from 16 to 20 cents in London and at from 20 to 24 cents per pound in New York. Chuck steak brought from 1 2 to 16 cents in New York. I have not the exact figures on hams and bacons, but was told within the past three weeks by an ex-Engfish-man, who sriU takes a London paper, that American bacon was quoted in his London paper some 4 cents a pound cheaper than it is sold for here. The American packers meet in Lon don the competition of meats shipped from Argentine. It is fair to assume that they are not losing any money on the meat they sell the Britishers. Why are our consumers forced to pay a higher price than the foreigners have to pay? If the packers can afford to sell round steak for 1 6 cents a pound in Lon don, they can afford to sell it for the same price, or a trifle less, in New York, for it costs something to ship it across the ocean. If they can afford to meet the competition of packers of Argentine in the English market, why should they be protected by a tariff here? The fad is that dressed meat can be produced as cheaply in the United States as in any country in the world and therefore the packers are not entitled to any tariff protection. To give packers the tariff protection is to enable them to xoh the consumers Mail & Breeze.
