SHASTA COURIER. SATURDAY MORNING. MAY 13. 1871. INDIANS. For some time past it has been rumored about Ft Crook that the Indians were threatening a general outbreak against the whites, but little attention ha? been paid to the matter. This week, residents of ihe upper Sacramento and lower Pit river inform us that there is great commotion among the Indians, and that representa tives from the Medoes, Goose Lakes, Pintes, and Snakes, have lately been among the McCloud and Sacramento River bands try ing to induce them to agree to join in a war against the whites. Should an out break occur, it would probably result in the murder of a number of settlers in isolated neighborhoods, and the plunder of their houses, but the idea of a regular war on the part of the Indians, to drive out the whites, '» preposterous at this late day. It is ad visable to watch the treacherous rascals in this county, however, as they may hatch up an alliance with the wild Indians by which they will be admitted into the settle ments and allowed an opportunity to in dulge in their propensity to murder and rob the defenseless. As long as there is a buck Indian alive in the county, there will be mischief committed or contempla ted. DEATH OF H. J. SHURTIEFF. A dispatch to Dr. Benj. Shurtleff, of this town, from Seattle, Washington Territory, dated May 10th, announces the death of his cousin, Harrison J. Shurtleff, at that place hy a falling tree. He was a native jjf Middleboroogb, Mass., and an early pioneer ofTJahfbrDia and Shasta county, having came to this coast with the Doc -1 tor on the schooner Boston, which rsailed from, Boston on the 27th of January, by way of the Straits of Magel lan, arriving in San Francisco on the 6th of July, 1849 —the day on which the well known ship Edward Everett, from the same port, the bark Attila from Plymouth and the brig Forrest from Newburyport, arrived. He came to Shasta —then Read ing’s Springs —on the 20th day of Octo ber of the same year, where, with the ex ception of brief Intervals he has ever since resided. He was a member of the OJd-Fellow and Good Templar Societies, a man of unusually bright intelligence, and noted for his be nevolent and generous disposition toward his fellow-men. A wide circle pf friends will mourn his untimely death. BRIEF MENTION. Several conjumnicatiors are necessarily laid over until next week. O. 11. Leonard, of the Industrial Reform newspaper, passed up on Thursday’s stage. The wife and family of Hon. A. R. An drews, returned from the East this week. Rev. George Oulton on Wednesday. He thinks the Republicans will elect their State ticket this year. John V. Scott, proprietor of the Empire Hotel, left this week for a visit to his rel atives in Pennsylvania, and will be absent two months. His wife also went East several weeks ago, Mr. Scott being detain ed uhtff this week by business. We, in with their many friends, wish them o pleasant visit, and a safe return to (heir California home. ; John Craddock will have general charge of the Empire Hotel, during the absence of its proprietor. Captain Charles Ander son will officiate as second in command, and of course everything under his supervision will move like clock-work. Charley is now in bis glory, is as “happy as a big sun flower,” and ready to make the patrons of the Empire “feel perfectly at home.” A miner gives ns this item : “A few days ago two men who claim a tract of land were establishing their lines prepara tory to applying to enter the ground as ag ricultural, when a dispute arose as to the exact location of one of the boundaries.— Becoming excited, one of the agricultural claimants forgot himself, and indignantly inquired of his partner; “If you run the line there, I'd like to know where the h—l we can damp the tailings when we go to sluicing this ground off?” Explanatory. —Agricultural land is 81.25, per acre and mineral $2.50, but who would perjure themselves for the difference in the price ? The head of a Vermont railroad shop was applied to for permission to work on Fast Day, by a couple of men noted for their laziness. Permission was given, “for,” says the chief, “you can’t either of you work hard enough to break the day.” j PROCEEDINGS OF TIfE BOARD OP SUPERVISORS. Board met on Monday May Ist—present L. Scott, J.
