White silk waistcoats, plain or vaguely patterned, are popular for evening wear. The fashionable fall shades for derby hats are black, brown and golden brown. Puff scarfs of black satin relieved by large figures in bright hues w ill be tbe rage. A fashionable business suit for fall is the long English sack in both rough and smooth goods. Chocolate is a favorite color in lounging suits, smoking jackets, gloves, hosiery and undergarments. The latest designs in fancy bordered handkerchiefs give the possessor some thing to look at and admire. One of the new Parisian follies, fresh from the exposition, is silk socks dyed in the colors of the French flag. Brocaded shawls promise to become an important adjunct to the wardrobeof the man of fashion. They are English. The full dress vest for the fall will have a larger opening than those now in use. displaying a larger surface of shirt front. Black socks, either plain or clocked, are in much request among club men both in town and at the summer resorts. Indistinctive color effects are also worn. M any of the bosoms shown by import ers are extravagant in embroidered ef fects. One of the new fads is a satin stripe on a ground of cambric. Pique bosoms are more popular than ever. Ow ing to the popularity of the patent leather slio - for street wear a number of society men are discussing the pmprietj of dropping it on full dre-s occasions. A movenii-nt to that end is un* 1* r way. Ti;e fad collar*, which became sudden ly popular in the spring and early sum mer. have fall* n into disfavor and, w ith the exception of a f w of t h ■ less start ling character, are seldom seen in New York. A decidedly English mod** and one that promises to become popular with American swells is silk underclothing in solid black. The garments are fashioned to the shape of the body and are rib knitted. Fashion demands that each wearer of a four-in-hand scarf shall have a pin in it. Gaudy designs are* eschewed, how ever, mat and small forms being the proper caper. Emeralds, rubies and pearls in delicate gold settings are very popular. Silk *a*li* * will dispute the field with white silk and pique vests for evening wear thi* sea.**>n. For the ballroom and receptions the sash will doubtless have the preference, hut at weddings, dinners ami tin- opera it will he more in form to wear a vi -t. MEN OF LETTERS. Julian Hawthorne, who accompanied the Seripps League excursion of Amer ican workingmen to the Paris exposi tion as historian, says that a second and more careful study of London leads him to the conclusion that there is more vice to the square mile in that city than any where else in the world. Mr. Hugh Farrar McDermott has con tributed a poem, entitled “Life Divine,” to The \V esthrook t Me.) Chronicle, which has so excited the admiration of the edi tor of that periodical that he predicts it will shine l**side the works of Milton and Dante, “not with light reflected, but with golden sunshine of its own internal luster." William Black is 40 years old, with a slight, graceful figure, which is well set off by bis elegant dress. His eyes are dark and have a very earnest expression, lie talks well, but says very little about his own works. DOINGS OF ROYALTY. King Kalakaua is writing a book on diplomacy. Queen Christian has made an ascent of 350 yards in a balloon. Two Egyptian princes, sons of the khedive, are being educated at Vienna. The Prince of Wales has the gift of free hand caricature, and is able to hit oil a likeness with a few marks of his pen.
