Because of the quaint costumes worn by the people In the play, the Murat stage next week will resemble an aged story b ook. “The School for Scandal” was writ ten in Sheridan’s 26th year and was first produced on May 8. 1777, at j Drury Lane Theater. London, with I one of the finest casts ever assembled j on an English-speaking stage. History of the School It is recorded Sheridan was char acteristically behind-hand with the manuscript of this comedy, the play having been announced before the parts were in the hands of the act ora j and the last five scenes had to be j dashed off while the earlier scenes were already in rehearsal. "The School for Scandal,” thus sue cessfully launched, ran for twenty nights in its first season and for sixty five in its second. The first performance of "The School for Scandal” on this side of the Atlantic was given In 1781. Pirated versions sprang up soot: after all over the United States under the ex- I traordinary title of “The Pernicious Vice of Scandal.” Play Loved by Actors A list of the players who bave ‘ played the several parts of this great play would constitute a catalog of all the prominent actors of the last century and a quarter in England and the United States. Let it be said Sir Charles Wyndham made his American debut as Charles Surface at Wallack's Theater, New York, 1869. The play was revived about ten years ago in New York at the New Theater, now called the Century, by! an all-star cast including Rose Cogh- 1 lan, Grace George, Louis Calvert and Charles Cherry.
