NOV. 28, 1922 DUES OFC. L, U. EJMSEO Boost of 1 Cent a Month Is Sub ject to Ratification by Locals. ‘GANG RULE’ IS CHARGED Central Body Thanked for Aid to Community Chest in Campaign. A motion calling for an increase in dues of 1 cent a month for each member of organized labor bodies in Indianapolis, was adopted, subject to ratification by the various locals, last night at a meeting of Central Labor Union. The proposed increase brings the per capita tax up to 3 cents a month for each member of organized bodies in Indianapolis. The tax was proposed by Arthur Lyday of the Motion Picture Opera tors’ Union, at a meeting six weeks ago. After a heated discussion the mat ter was settled by voting in favor of the addition, subject to ratification by the local unions throughout the city. A copy of the resolution, to gether with a report of the financial standing of the central body and a list of its expenses will be sent to each local. The tax levy will come up f for final adoption or rejectioft at the first meeting of the body next year. Opposition Melvin Scaggs. opposed to the meas ure, in a YVebstarian burst of oratory, charged the central body with being run by “gang rule.” The whole or ganized labor movement is run- by a “gang rule” method, according to 3caggs. Homer W. Borst, executive secretary of the Indianapolis Community Chest, thanked the Central Labor Union for the support which it had given the chest In its campaign to raise $613,584 for organized charities in the city. He pointed out that charity alone would not solve the economic problems, but that under the present system chari ties were a necessity and 'that organ ized labor had done its part nobly. He invited the Centra! Labor Union to select representatives to assist the Commnuitv Chest in its further work. Mr. Borst suggested that ,it might be better to change tht name of the Community Chest because the present name probably “brought up unpleas ant memories.” MINEELECTi INTEREST SILL The coming election of officials of the United Mine Workers to be held Dec. 12, is expected by union leaders not to attract much attention. With the withdrawal of George Mercer of Canton, IIL, as candidate for president of the international or ganization, President John L. Lewis, Vice President Thomas Murray and Secretary William Green, all up for re election. will be unopposed. Mercer withdrew when he learned of his small vote received for nomina tion. President John Hessler of dis trict 1L Indiana, was placed in the field by a number of local unions, but refused to run. In district 11, the real fight is ex pected in the election of officials. President Hessler, Vice President T. L Roberts and Secretary William Mitch are all up for re-election. A large number of candidates are in the field, however. Followers of the present administra tion of the district claim that present officials will be re-elected because of their record during the recent miners' strike Mitch and Hessler are among the thirty-two candidates seeking election of delegates to the American Federa tion of Labor. JUight are to be elected.
