Churches Urge
All to Vote *

Churches throughout the
country are enlisting solid
ly in the campaign to "Get Out
the Vote.”
Church leaders, through the
Commission of Social Service, have
launched a voters’ campaign aim
ing at 100 per cent registration and
voting of all qualified citizens.
"Men are not doing their duty |
in voting and the worst of it is
that it is the better type of citizen
who is neglecting his civic duties,"
says Dr. Worth M. Tippy, secre
tary of the Federal Council Com
mission.
"LYiless all citizens can be
aroused to the necessity of voting
the country will suffer. Church
leaders must utilize every possible
effort to emphasize the importance
of voting."

to Tell What Happened,
John Hale, Stop 3, Plainfield line,
is city hospital unable to tell
police what happened to ( him. Ennis
Glason, Logansport, Ind., Pennsyl
vania brakeman, called police to the
Holt Rd. crossing and said that the
engineer had stopped the trai t when
he saw Hale lying alongside the
tracks. Police believe he may have
become ill and fainted.
Harry Turner. 17, colored. 1325
Lafayette St., is charged with as
sault and battery with intent to kill,
and Shirley Spencer, 23, colored,
1310*2 N. Senate Ave., with vagrancy
and assault and battery as result of
a tight in which police said Turner
stabbed Spencer in the back with a
butcher knife. Spencer is at the city
hospital in a critical condition.
Henrietta Watson, colored, 39, of
232 *s Rankin St , is in a serious con
dition at the city hospital with cuts
said to have been inflicted by George
Baker, colored, 38, of the same ad
dress. Mrs. Watson said that Baker
w.anted her to loan him a quarter,
and when she refused he wielded a
hazor. Baker was slated.

Police Fail to Find Yeggs at North
side Rank.
Squads cf pol.ee hurried to the
Meridian State Bank, 101S X. Me
ridian St., late Sunday night on re
port that the burglar alarm was
sounding. After surrounding the
building, the cops wended their way
inside by breaking a window, police
say some persons on the outside
said they saw someone inside. No
one could be found and nothing had
been disturbed. It is thought the
alarm became short-circuited.
New Church Dedicated

bold. "The Fast Set,” as being pre
sented at the Apollo this week, is
highly interesting drama, made so by
the splendid work of a remarkable

every stage of the game, but not too
moral although she thinks she is.
Menjou gives just the kind of work
that you expect from the master of
"nasty nice men" who engage in the
"art” of breaking up homes or
romping with wives while rich hus
bands are at work. Za.Su Pitts as
Mona of the street gives a real life
blood impersonation. The real ar
ticle in this sort of work. Picture
has been wisely directed and beau
tifully staged.

queen persons who do their loving

be the author of the story. But
Gloria must have put over this
mother-love stuff, because women'
all around me were having the
"best" time crying and declaring
that Gloria was too gloriously sweet
for words. And so they cried ’em
into th. ir handkerchiefs.
And that, folks, is the real test
of entertainment. The stage and
screen arc not all laughs. Drama
and feeling has Its place In both
forms of entertainment. Remember
the audience is always bigger than
just one individual. Entertainment
Is made for the people and not a few
critics. It has always been my
thought that a critic should not
,-popp tip into the clouds and pass
judgement unaided. Watch th<y oth
er fellow as well as yourself. That's
my idea of an honest account of
what happens In a tlyater.

the bottle out of her hands, badly
burning her mouth and arms. She
succeeded in swallowing a portion
of the poison.

Wu Organizes Army for
Drive on Chinese Capital.

PEKIN, Oct. 27.—The Christian
Chinese - army, holding Pekin, pre
pared today to meet a threatened at
tack from direction of Tientsin,
where Marshal Wu Pei Fu, refusing
to be ousted from the Chi Li prov
ince, was understood to be mobiliz
ing the remnants of his army for a
drive on the capital.
Marshal Feng Yu Hsiang, Chris
tian general defending the city,
has some 40,000 troops.
Meanwhile the cabinet here was
being reorganized, subject to Feng's
approval.

Fred Murphy Held at City Hospital

Police are waitng for Fred
Murphy, 37 E. Michigan St. to re
cover at city hospital where he is
held with a cut head on a charge of
intoxication to learn what happened
to him.

piano, were walking east on Wash
ington St., near Noble St., late Sun
day night when they saw Murphy
running west on Washington St., fol
lowed by trwo men. Murphy fell and
his pursuers escaped.
