6 BETTER TALENT IS BADLY NEEDED ON RADIO PROGRAMS New Republic Declares Broadcasting Is Not Intelligent. Iht XEA Serrirr NEW YORK, Oct. 27. —Radio will not become an intellectual force in society until its broadcast directors and speakers are picked for their education and intelligence, programs of higher quality are arranged and advertisers and propagandists are banished from the studios. With these recommendations, the Xew Republic, weekly periodical of opinion, indicts radio broadcasting today as unintelligent, commercial ized and ur.progressive, while it sees in this industry the development of a powerful educational institution. “In most parts of the country,” reads an editorial, “fully 90 per cent of the nonmusical material on the air is sheer rubbish, not worth the attention of any one with more than an S-year-old mind.” Good Talent Needed Paid advertising is forced on the listener, the writer continues, after dinner speeches are transmitted with little regard to their merit, and a corps of volunteer publicists fill the air nightly. Os course, broadcasters must pay to get competent enter tainers and speakers, but tbis is just as important as having good men in the faculty of a great university, he adds. “This remarkable invention,” the writer explains, "with potential pow ers second only to those of the print ing press and with an audience al ready nearly as la”ge as that of our entire public school system, is main ly under control of men unfitted by training and personality for posts of such importance. “While there are a few exceptions, such as station* maintained by uni versities, it is generally true that the making of programs is in the hands of underpaid individuals, picked up at haphazard, usually musicians or men whose primary interest is music. They are admirably fitted to assemble orchestras, pianists and singers; but when it comes to lec tures and addresses they are about as competent as Florenz Ziegfeld is to run Columbia University. Like Movies “The development of motion pic tures in the United States was held back half a decade because at first it was in the control of fly-by-nights, adventurers and reformed pushcart I-eddlers, not one ir. a hundred of whom had reached the social level where one takes one's hat off in doors. “Radio broadcasting seems threat ened by the same fate, and for some what the same reason: because a re markable new educational device has suddenly developed as a sort of by product of industry and is therefore in the hands of business men not only ignorant of its proper use. but indifferent as to whether it is used properly or not.’ Map Sent by Radio During the military maneuvers in France, the famous Belin system of transmitting photos by radio was used to send a map from one sec tion of the country to another. Shakespeare by Radio Shakespeare is on the air. Sta tion WLS, at Chicago, has begun a series of presentations of the famous dramatist's plays, through the micro phone. Big scenes of popular operas also will be reproduced. AN EVENING AT HOME WITH THE LISTENER IN (Courtesy of and Copyright 1924 By Radio Difeat Publuhing Cos.) EXTREME CARE NEEDED IN CHECKING HOOK-UPS By ISRAEL KLEIN NEA Service Radio Editor Hook-ups hastily connected and carelessly checked may result in the loss of much time and money. This is the essential point in con sidering the matter of keeping vacuum tubes longest. Vacuum tubes are costly and delicate, and must therefore be used with extreme care and caution. A wrong connection, an unchecked short, any one of several missteps may result in a blown-out tube. To avoid this, the best advice for fans who make their own receivers is to check up on their circuits Step by step. * The first wiring to be done in any receiver is installation of the fila ment leads. These wires should be run along the base, if possible, and all connections with tube sockets, A battery and rheostats completed before any other wiring is begun. This voltage will light up the tube with abnormal brilliancy. That will be enough to show that there is an er ror in the connections. Beware Waste At all times, tubes should be burned at the lowest effective point for good reception. Too much fila ment current and plate voltage cause the thorium coating, especially on such tubes as the 199 and 201-A, to burn off, leaving an inefficient tube. Whenever there is difficulty with reception, the best way to check over a hook-up is to turn off the controls. Sometimes, however, this isn’t prac ticable, especially when the effect of certain changes is to be noted in the tubes or the whole apparatus. WEEKLY Business and Industrial NEWS [ORPINS TRACTOR TRUCK EFFECTS SAVING ON FUEL Fordson Power Plant Gives Efficiency at Low Price, Igx>ks almost as though the ideal had been reached when O. F. Sehlensker, sole distributor for the Toppins Tractor Truck with a Ford son Power Plant, shmi’s how from $1,200 to $1,500 may be saved on a tractor truck that will haul nearly any weight and acquire as great speed as a much more expensive tractor. The 3’-i-ton Toppins tractor has eight speeds for grade pulling and the changes may he made without a shift of gears. The 2*rtn truck does not require such a great pulling power, hut will give the same speed. The low grade of fuel reduces the running costs to a minimum and prevents the common heating and boiling up of tha average tractor when pulling a heavy' load up a steep grade. Fordson power plant parts nay be secured at nearly every cross roads village arul roadside general lore. These very facts about the Ford son power plant are the essential diets sought by road builders and ueavy hauling specialists. Sehlensker asserts that not only is the most less on the Fordson plant, hut the depreciation and upkeep decidedly less than on any other trick of proven merit on the market. REPAINTING GOOD FOR CAR AND YOG For the good of your car, as wel! as for your own satisfaction, re painting is recommended by John Saalmiller, 437 E. Tenth St., who does high-grade automobile paint ing. The old style painting, which 'akes about twentq-one days, has been improved upon by several new methods, such as tho Vitrolite enamel system, Nurcoto and Dy roxylin. which fake only about ten days. The new rystems are perhaps a little more expensive, Saalmiller said, but vastly more satisfactory. It's almost like haring anew car. And there is no question about it— you become attached to the old car you've driven a year or two, and if the old engine still sings a melo dious song .there would he a lot of real joy in giving “her” just a nice 1 new dress and keeping her another season or so.
