ATT*}. 26, 1927 ‘Larruping Lou ’ Gehrig to Be Crowned Greatest Baseball Player of 1927 Such Is Opinion of Farrell in Pre-Guessing Writers’ Pick. VALUABLE TO YANKEES Has Great Chance for Bat ting Records. By HENRY L. FARRELL United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Aug. 26.—Crown ing Lou Gehrig, the wrestler pro portioned first baseman of the New York Yankees, as the greatest ball player of 1927 may be called con tempt of court or an act of lese majeste. There are In the major leagues two juries of eight writers each from every station on the circuits, who are constituted as a jury to name at the close of the season the most valuable ball player in each league. To the player elected •roes a piece of parchment and, in the* case of the National League, SI,OOO. Pre-guessing the verdict of the jury in a civil or criminal court would be an act in contempt of court, but the statutes of baseball law are less severe and taking ad vantage of leniency we will offer a motion that regardless of Babe Ruth, the Waner boys, Charley Root, Gabby Hartnett, Hack Wil son and Harry Heilmann, Buster Gehrig is the outstanding ball play er of the year. To be the most valuable player to his team, for which the prize and the citation are offered, the winner must not be an outstanding star player. But, if there is a more valuable player to his team than Lou Gehrig is to the*Yankees and if there is any star who stands out above him, you can sell that star to Col. Jake Ruppert for about one million bucks. Is Gehrig a great ball player? You can get the answer by read ing the play-by-play stories of Yankee ball games in recent weeks. “Gehrig was parsed purposely,” you will read when the description is 4 Rotary Roof Ventilators Doube sets of ball bearings insure continuous efficient operation without expense. The Babe has been through years of the same thing when a cautious manager ordered a careful pitcher to send the Babe down instead of giving him a chance to hit. Shooting at Records And there are other reasons why young Buster Gehrig has a chance to become one of the greatest ball players of all times. He Is shooting this year at a number of individual records that even the great Ty Cobb never achieves. Here are some of them: ' 1927 home run championship. 1927 American League batting championship. 1927 most runs scored. All time record runs batted in. All time reco.d for long hits. All time record extra base' hits. What more could any ball player strive for or any manager want in a ball player? Looks Like Goods And consider this! Buster Geh rig is 24 years of age. He is what a football coach would call a soph omore on the squad. He has years ahead of him and the way he is go ijig his future Is like an orchard of yearling sprouts waiting only for age to mature. Not so long ago when Colonel Ruppert went for more than $200,000 on Babe Ruth’s contract the rival magnates chuckled with the thought—“what will the colonel do when the Babe is through?” The colonel can answer with the last chuckle, which is usually the best— “ How are you going to pitch to that Dutchman?” No Charge for Alterations Open All Day Saturday Until 9 P.
