him to call a special session of the
Senate. They would prefer to have
him assemble the House, too, but
will be content if the Senate con
venes six to eight weeks In advance
of the regular session.
The special session is needed,
senators say, to permit Congress to
function and adjourn before next
June when the presidential nomi
nating convention will be held.
The possibility now of the fights
against the seating of Senators Vare
of Pennsylvania and Smith of Illi
nois delaying the entire legislative
program has senators worried. They
want the Senate to concentrate on
these ouster proceedings, organize
itself, and get down to the business
of Imperative legislation, such as
flood relief.
Until the Vare and Smith cases
are concluded senators say It will
be difficult for the Senate to defi
nitely organize itself.
Including Vare and Smith there
will be forty-eight Republicans in
the next Senate, forty-seven Demo
crats and one Farmer-Labor mem
ber. If the Senate should hold that
the former labor secretary, William
B. Wilson, Democrat, was elected
senator from Pennsylvania last fall
and not Vare, the actual balance of

power will be held by Senator Ship
stead of Minnesota, the Farmer-
Labor member.

UNION KNOCKS AGAIN

Clothing Workers Will Seek
A. J. of L. Approval.
Bu Times Special
SAN FRANCISCO. Sept. 6.—“ The
most cosmopolitan labor union in
America” will again knock for ad
mission at the door of the Ameri
can Federation of Labor at its an
nual convention in Los Angeles in
October. v
This is the Amalgamated pioth
ing Workers of America, the only
rebel union ever to have “made
good,” the union that abolished
sweatshops in the United States, the
first to gain the forty-four-hour
week, the one that Americanized
and humanized the clothing indus
try among refugee Jews of New
York, Chicago and other cities, and
that has contributed—so it claims
the one big and new labor idea of
the past decade —that labor should
be responsible for cheaper and bet
ter production.
"If the A. F. of L. takes action
this year to admit us we will be
grateful,” said Secretary Joseph
Schlossberg. “If not, we will con
tinue to cooperate with the organ
ized workers everywhere until such
time as we are recognized.”
