JULY 13, 1928. TODD’S DEATH COMES ON EVE OF BIGMERGER Worked for Two Years on Project to Unite Traction, tion, Power Properties. The sudden death of Robert I. Todd, traction chief, came when he was about to see culmination of t,vo years’ effort toward merger of the Terre Haute, Indianapolis & Eastern Traction Company, of which he Was president, and the Insull owned Central Indiana Power prop crties This project, his chief interest in the last two years of his life, nad been advanced under his direction so ably, say his friends, that its accomplishment soon is assured T. H., I. & E. stockholders are to meet Aug. 1 to approve the merger con tract. If they do it will go to the public service commission for ap proval. Careful of Health Coordination of bus and street car service, following the recent pur chase of the People’s Motor Coach; Company by the Indianapolis Street Railway Company of which Mr. Todd was president, repeatedly was nearing completion under his direc tion. The establishment of sub stations to supply even and adequate power to street cars in all parts of the city was accomplished under his plan. Trustworthy, industrious, conscien tious, and withal, wholly unpreten tious were the characteristics Mr. Todd’s shocked associates recalled today in describing the man whose name, imprcr-vi, on street car tokens, is cr.r: ed in the purse or pocket of nearly every Indianapolis resident. Extremely mindful of his own health, Mr. Todd was at all times Y“^Tjs^^our^Credit —Traugoff’7"™ ft©'* (K[\n 10-PAYMENT PLAN a tfiSa Permits yoj to take advantage of these star- I -.‘Vje <sß* 8 y tlinß bargains and never miss the money. —Save from 25% to 50% on everything you buy!—Hurry! Kessler, together with Latimer Innerst of near here, was hauling water into a field to spray potato plants when the wagon hit a ditch and Kessler was thrown on his head. He is paralyzed but able to talk and eat. concerned in the health of those about him, said L. T. Hixson, T. H., I. & E. auditor. “ ‘You should do this or that to protect your health,’ Mr. Todd told us when we reap peared after sickness,” said Hixon. No Vacation in 22 Years In the twenty-two years Mr. Todd had been in traction circles here he had never taken a vacation, said D. E. Watson, attorney for Mr. Todd’s traction interests, and his constant associate. “His work was his greatest pleas ure,” said the attorney. “Occasion ally, when business called him East, he would spend a day or two at his summer home on the Potomac with Mrs. Todd and' the boy—but never so much as a week. “Wednesday, before he left for New York, he told me of the pleas ure he was getting out of the little garden he tends himself at his home here. He appeared in the best of health. I have never heard him complain of his health, nor express any wish to retire. “To the visitor in his office Mr. Todd’s desk presented a bewilder ing heap of papers and books, but he could place his fingers on any thing he wanted at a moment’s no tice. “Being an engineer and of a me chanical turn of mind, tools were his hobby. ‘I have to watch not to JOHNNY GIN--- BEER pass a hardware store,’ he once told me, ‘for I can’t resist buying new tools when I see them in the win “At his home Mr. Todd had a workshop, replete with tools of all sorts, where he tinkered away many conteneed hours. “He was an enthusiastic collector of old razors, admiring them for their fine workmanship. In his col lection were fine old blades such as the Tally ho Pox, the Bendal, Wade & Butcher and Sheffield. So loyal was he to the old straight blades that he would have nothing to do with ‘safeties.’ “Mr. Todd always walked from his home, 1329 N. New Jersey St., to the Traction Terminal Bldg, and returned afoot. When he wanted an auto ride, he drove himself. “For social events, he had no particular liking and he made no show of the prominence i he achieved in traction circles,” said Watson. Mr. Todd smoked pipe and cigars and was liberal in his views on temperance as in all his views on personal conduct, excepting matters affecting health and efficiency. invariably he was present, though often so unassuming as to go un noticed, at public hearings on trans portation matters.
