PAGE 10 Radio AMATO TO SING IN OPERA ROLE ON BROADCAST Cast of Radio Presentation Composed of Well- Known Dramatists. BY G. B. WINSTEAD United Prf Radm Editor NEW YORK, Jan. 17.—What golden memories race through the mind of Pasquale Amato as he pre pares to sing the role of ‘'Sheriff Jack Ranee” in Puccini’s ‘‘Girl of the Golden West” in the radio pre miere Saturday evening. For It was Amato who created the role at the memorable perform ance at the Metropolitan Opera house in New York, Dec. 10, 1910. Former Cast Puccini, the composer, was pres ent. Tcscaninni conducted. The trio of singing principals included Amato, the golden-voiced Caruso in the tenor role of Dick Johnson, outlaw; and Emily Destinn, the soprano who sang the role of the girl, Minnie. Amato is appreciative of his op portunity to attain take the main i>art in anew premiere of * The Girl ot the Golden West.” for this performance Saturday night over the radio is as much an inaugural as was the original operatic per formance, inasmuch as the opera has never before been broadcast. Alda Will Sing A great cast will sing with him on Saturday; not as great, how ever. as the original F, ances Alda, fresh from her triumphant fare well at the Metropolitan a few reeks ago—a farewell which was i edicated to radio —will appear as Minnie. Mario Chamlee, also a r eteran of the Metropolitan, will ippear as Dick Johnson, the role treated by Caruso. Gennaro Papi, for twelve years conductor of Italian opera at the Metropolitan and a veteran leader of Puccini scores, will direct the or chestra. Alois Havrilla will narrate the story after the version pre pared by Robert A. Simon. Puccini Composer "The Girl of the Golden West” is an American subject, made into opera by the composer, Puccini. The composer was put into mind of writ ing it after viewing the play of the same name by David Belasco. He saw the performance at the Acad emy of Music in New York, was en thralled and immediately obtained Belasco’s permisson to write it in operatic form. A knife wound on the sailor's hand became infected, and being 700 miles off Seattle, en route to Honolulu, physicians instructions were asked. Ross radioed advice to the ship. Murder Trial Feb. 4 NOBLES VILLE, Ind., Jan. 17. The murder trial of Thomas Smith has been set Feb. 4 in Hamilton circuit court here. The defendant is charged with having killed his wife at Indianapolis in September. The case was brought here on a change of venue from Marion county. Two bandits took $45 from Bert Van Ween, attendant at a Shell filling station at English avenue and the Brookville road Thursday night, locking him in a lavatory room while they escaped. A lone bandit robbed Harry Penish, attendant at a National filling station at Twelfth street and Capitol avenue, of sls. Two motor ists inflating tires at the station did not know a holdup was in progress until the bandit fled. Barney Walton, attendant at a Great Western filling station at Highland avenue and Washington street, was robbed of $5 and five gallons of gasoline by a bandit who purchased the gas, gave a $5 bill in payment, received the change and then forced Walton to return the $5. The Walgreen drug store at 3367 North Pennsylvania street, was en tered by burglars Thursday night and fifty-five cartons of cigarets valued at $36 were taken.
