PAGE 8 HEFLIN CHANCES TO RETAIN POST REGARDED SUN! Only Miracle Can Save Job for Alabama Senator, Observers Claim. flu flcriSpe-Hovari Sew ’paper Alliance BIRMINGHAM. Ala., Jan. 17. Nothing but a political miracle can save J. Thomas Heflin, senior sen ator from Alabama, from defeat in the general elec*ion this fall. But there are many who will bet on the miracle. Heflm, because of the bitter fight he made against the candidacy of A1 Smith in the 1928 presidential campaign, has been kicked out of the Democratic pr.marv set for August, and that means that he will be faced with a single opponent: who will have the back ng of the powerful Democratic machine when the general election comes. Despite Heflin's record of never having lost an election in Alabama. hi3 opponents point out that he never has been popular in the middle district of the state, and i claim that his previous election re sulted from split opposition. Prejudice Cited They also claim that Heflin can nr l hope to hold all oi the 120,000 vctes received by Herbert Hoover in 1928, since many voters undoubtedly cast their ballots for the Republican candidate because of Smith's prohi bition stand and because of his religion. John H. Bankhead, the only an nounced Democratic nominee, is a dry and a Protestant. His adherents J say that he will keep all of the 127,- j 000 Smith voters and get many of the 120,000, who voted for Hoover. Heflin, on the other hand, de pends largely on the thousands of friends he has over the state, and on his own prowess as a campaigner. Even Heflin’s most bitter enemies, and he has many do not deny that he is a hard man to beat on the j stump. And Heflin has indicated i that he will stump the state in be- j half of his interests. Saw Handwriting Many political observers say that they saw the handwriting on the wall for Heflin when H. L. Ander ton, prominent leader of the ultra- t dry church faction in Birmingham, ! announced that he would support ' the Democratic nominee. They claim that Anderton simply was smart enough to get on the bandwagon. Heflin probably will make his campaign on the fact that he “con sistently has fought the battle of the common people against the cor porations.” This line of attack is aimed di rectly at Bankhead, a corporation , lawyer and a mine operator. Heflin's weakness in the "Black Belt,” the oldest and most aristo cratic section of the state, is in the I f\7k] CAT 17 AT STORE No. 2 V/FN D/a.I iTj 215 West Washington Street Directly Opposite Stateliouse JIOW —Again we prove our slogan that we will no t be undersold. It is conceded generally that Heflin will hold his own in the so called white counties of northern Alabama, where the small farmer has sworn by him for more than a decade, but in the plantation coun try, Heflin must make a far better showing than Hoover did in order to win.
