‘MORE MONEY’
COSTING U. S.
GOOD OFFICIALS
Hoover Puzzled by Problem
to Keep $25,000-a-Year
Men for $12,000.
}tn flitted Peru*
WASHINGTON. Aug. 28.—Prob
lem of convincing $25,000-a-year
business men they should accept
$12,000-a-year government jobs is
proving perplexing for President
Hoover.
, The governorship of the federal
reserve board, the presidency of the
Emergency Fleet Corporation and
four vacancies on the new tariff
commission must be filled within
the next few weeks.
Mr. Hoover wants men of vision
and tried ability for all of these
posts, but the men desired prefer to
remain in private life where they
can earn considerably more than
the SII,OOO or $12,000 a year of
fered by the government.
The situation was illlustrated on
Wednesday when Roy A. Young re
signed from the governorship of the
reserve board because he could make
more money as governor of the Fed
i eral Reserve bank of Boston.
The fleet corporation post .was left
vacant only the day before by the
death of John R. Gordon, looked
upon by the President as one of the
most efficient men in the govern
ment.
Young's successor must be a man
with a wide knowledge of the bank
ing situation.
Gordon’s post must be filled with
a shipping executive who would be
able to command from a private in
terest probably twice the salary the
government will offer him.
The tariff commie uon vacancies
offer a similar puzzle. Five men
turned down the chairmanship be
, fore Henry P. Fletcher, veteran dip
-1 lomat. finally was induced to take it.
