Man Freed After 50 Days in Jail for Lack of S3O Judge Williams Steps Into Scene, Orders Release From City Cell. From a cell in Marion county jail, William Kleine walked forth Tuesday to plod the city's streets in search of a Job and means to pay S3O, for Jack of which he had been confined since June 20. He was placed in jail because of delinquency in payment of $5 weekly support money to his wife, Mrs. Bertha Kleine and his 4-year old daughter, Geraldine. Following a story in The Times Thursday calling attention to Kleine's plight and the absence of Judge Russell J. Ryan in Europe, Superior Judge Joseph R. Williams became interested in the case and telephoned Sheriff Charles Sumner to release Kleine. “Because of Ryan's absence in Europe, I am acting in this case in order that Kleine will have an op portunity ot earn the money with which to make his payments,’' Wil liams said. The Times had pointed out that Kleine's only source of income was his own labor, of which he was de prived by his jail imprisonment. Kleine had no plans for his future, except that he would return to his home at 1147 English avenue, where he had been living with a sister. His former job as a machinist’s helper at the Beech Grove railroad shops is closed to him for the pres ent, since the shops will not reopen until early in September. But at least he Is free—free, like hundreds of others, to look for a job —and at least go to bed at night without shadows of iron bars falling across his cot. MRS. By United Press NEW YORK, Aug. 10.—Striking clothing workers have adapted Ma hatma Gandhi's passive resistance principle to fit their own needs— and reported success when a dozen strikers lay down in front of a delivery truck and stopped it. The truck was moving near Fifth avenue with a load of nonunion products. A dozen strikers darted from the sidewalk and dropped before the truck. Bystanders shouted warnings, but the strikers wanted no help. The truckman stopped. A few moments later he headed back to ward his starting point, escorted by strikers. It’s an effective plan, Sidney Hillman, president of the Amalga mated Workers, said. The clothing workers are striking in an effort to close sweat shops and nonunion plants. TINY DEER GETS ‘LOST’ By United Press SYRACUSE. N. Y„ Aug. 10.—Small children and grownups were enter tained in Schiller park recently, when a small female deer appeared from no one knew where and un concernedly began romping in the grass. The tiny animal soon tired, how ever, of the curious looks of the fast-growing audience, and trotted off toward Woodlawn cemetery. Unfamiliar with such civilized contraptions as iron fences, she wedged her head in the cemetery gate and received slight cuts on the face and head. She was released by a spectator, who notified the game warden. The visitor was then escorted to a patch of woods outside of town and re leased.
