PAGE 6 FOREIGN FIRMS START OUT OF MSNCHUSTATE ‘Open Door’ Pledge Brings Little Hope for Trade Interests There. BY HERBERT K. EKINS l nited PrfM Staff Correspondent PEIPING, May s.—British and other foreign business interests rapidly are being forced to leave Manchoukuo despite Japan’s pledge to maintain the "open door” policy, a prominent business man asserted here today. The man, a director of one of the firms involved, told the United Press that the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, the Jardine Matheson Cos., and other important British firms already had instructed their staffs to prepare to close their branches in Man choukuo. He declared this step was forced upon them on account of the rapid closing of the “open door” in Man choukuo—formerly Manchuria—to foreign trade. He said the Manchoukuo govern ment was placing intolerable obstacles to the free movement of the personnel of British business firms in the new puppet state, con trolled by Japan. Instructions that these British firms, some of them, including the two named, among jhe oldest and most influential in the far east, evacuate Manchoukuo, and give up the struggle to do business in the face of impossible hindrances, were said to have been issued with the full knowledge and assent of the British government. Assurances of equal opportunity for business voiced recently in Tokio and Manchoukuo by men in re sponsible positions met with derision among foreigners in Peiping, who declared “pin pricking” tactics made it intolerable to continue to do busi ness under the new regime.
