PAGE 14 A 1-Day Ad in The Times Returned My Terrier, Says S. Williamson —Let's Go Fishing— BARBEE LAKE ANGLERS LAND THREE TURTLES Good and Bad Sport Mixed for City Fishermen at Morgan’s Lodge. BY LEFTY LEE TimM Fishing Editor Walter Jones returned from an other trip to Morgan's lodge. Barbee lake, where he and Joe Moore of the Smith & Moore Company and their wives enjoyed some good and not so good fishing from Saturday until Tuesday. Saturday’s sport was a complete failure, practice being the only thing they got, but during the early morning rain Sunday, Jones landed four keepers, the larg est being three and one-half pounds, and Moore took three that averaged two pounds. The high northeast wind spoiled the fishing Monday, and when the same conditions prevailed Tuesday, Jones put his artificial baits away, secured some large minnows from Stan Morgan, and caught three soft shell turtles. Yes, Walter, we like our turtle fried. Prior to this trip, Moore had caught two bass, and he wants his friends to know that he is now a full-fledged fisherman. Jones says Moore's favorite song while landing a bass was "Me and My Baby.” Eddie Meyer and Walt English left for Shafer lake Wednesday, and will remain until Sunday. Meyer just has returned from a long trip, In the west, and more than ready to try for some of this state’s famous bass. Warden Charles Herron of Hope, Ind., writes in to tell us that there is some real fishing in his part of the state, also some dandy catches being reported from Clifty Creek, Flat Rock and Driftwood. Come again, warden, as we always are glad to give the angler the news from all parts of the state. We dread the day when Johnny Beam returns from Springer Lake, Mich. From then on it will be one fish tale after another to listen to. Even if he has the pictures, we will take his stories with a grain of salt, because we remember one trip with him that ended at a fish market. The stocking of Lake Wawasee with wall-eyed pike is starting to bring results, O. L. Mummert tak ing a five-pounder of this species recently. Charles Brain, easily takes the honors as the veteran of Wawasee, this being his fifty-seventh season on this lake. His first trip this sea son resulted in a catch of three nice bass and a string of perch. Hunters should have some fine sport this fall, fishermen from the city reporting that they are seeing hundreds of quail and young rab bits on their trips to the lakes and streams. Walt Roeder also reports squirrel plentiful west of the city. The storm of Saturday and Sun day has raised some of the streams, but they should be in good shape for the week-end. Good news for the crappie fisher men is the report from the lake region that this popular fish has finished spawning. R. D. Fleming, warden in charge of the conservation department fish crews, has moved the crew at Web ster lake to Tippecanoe lake, and the crew from Sylvan lake to Ship shewona lake. The crew at Blue lake will remain there for a few days. The warden of Whitley and Allen counties advises the angler to bring his worms along, as they are very scarce in that part of the country. Kenny Nield and the writer lo cated one of those spots that re main a deep secret, the discovery turning failure into success. Return ing from Mill creek early Sunday morning, with nothing but mosquito bites to remind us that we had been fishing, we passed a stream that looked promising, and stopped. The result was thirty bluegill, redeye and catfish, in one and one-half hours. No, I won't tell where it is. Members of the Westlake Fishing Club, disappointed because of their failure to get the fish, after long trips during the holiday, were out Wednesday night, and the bass were hitting for some of the boys. A guaranteed method of carrying minnows, one that always proved successful for us. is to place the minnows in a large container, about one-quarter full of water, then place a cake of ice on the lid. so it will drip into the bucket. Then wrap the bucket and ice airtight with canvas, or other heavy material. When you reach the lake you will find the bait in perfect shape. Be sure to change the temperature by degrees then, as too sudden a change will kill them every time. In the Air Weather conditions at 9 a. m.: South-southeast wind, ten miles an hour: temperature, 79; baromet ric pressure, 300 15 at sea level; gen eral conditions, scattered clouds: ceiling unlimited; visibility, ten miles.
