HOLLYWOOD IGNORES RETURN OF FAIRBANKS Film Colony Not Excited by Doug's Return to United States. By Vnilrtl Pirns I HOLLYWOOD. Aug. 9.—The ; home-coming of Douglas Fairbanks. ' film actor and estranged husband ol Mary Pickford, apparently has j awakened much greater interest i among movie fans than among members of the film colony. News of Fairbanks’ return aboard ; the steamer Rex with Joseph | schenck. producer, today failed to j cause more than an extra ripple in Hollywood. Much more interest was i being shown Schenck's romance on t.’ie Riviera than Fairbanks’ return. Approved for Trip Into Sea. !By I d I'r- * WASHINGTON, Aug. 9.—Prepar ! ing to explore the ocean one-hal! mile below the surface—deeper than man ever has gone before—Dr. Wil liam Beebe cabled the National Geo | graphic Society from Bermuda | today that he had tested his ap paratus at tremendous depths and ; found it satisfactory, i The heavy steel ball, called a bathysphere, in which D r . Beebe will descend to the inky blackness ‘ of the sea bottom was lowered un ! manned to a depth nearly six ! tenths of a mile yesterday. This was the greatest depth to ! which the apparatus ever had bee l \ sent but Dr. Beebe advised the so ciety that there had been no leak ! ace and that all the equipment ap i pearcri to work satisfactorily. Await Favorable Weather j In view of the test. Dr. Beebe and | Otis Barton, inventor of the bathy sphere, are expected to go down in j the steel ball as soon as weather conditions are favorable. In general appearance, the bathy sphere is much like the gondola of the stratosphere balloon. The bathysphere is made of heavy steel to resist the terrific pressure I of more than one thousand pounds | or one-half ton to the square inch i which is exerted by the ocean water lat a depth of a half mile. It is i only about six feet in diameter. Windows Made of Quartz With cable weighing six tons to the mile the bathysphere is lowered from a specially equipped trawler. The two windows in the bathy sphere are of three-inch-thick fused quartz, the strongest transparent material known to science. Dr. Beebe plans to remain below the surface about four hours and hopes to be able to identify many strange forms of marine life. The expedition is being financed ! jointly by the National Geographic Society and the New York Zoolog j leal Society.
