Dodgers Are Uncertain in Two Departments of Play BY STUART CAMERON United Press Snorts Editor CLEARWATER, Fla., March 31—The Brooklyn Dodgers are prepar ing to break camp here boasting a well-rounded pitching staff bus troubled with ah uncertain infield and outfield. “Just have to wait and see how we shake down,” Manager Casey Stengel said today. “We're by no means set yet. However, I figure we got all the best of the trades we made and I can’t see anybody with a better chance to top the second division than Brooklyn.” The pitching is the best part of the club. Stengel figures he has five dependable starters. Lead-off man is towering George Earnshaw who looks better than any time since he was winning for the Athletics witn Bob Grove. Van Mungo, who led Dodgers pitchers with 16 wins last year, is showing well, too. So are Fred Frankhouse and Ed Brandt, on from Boston, and the venerable William Watson Clark. Tom Zachary and Tom Baker promise dependable sup port. Best newcomer is A1 Butcher, 24-game winner with Galveston last year. Behind the plate Brooklyn has the veteran Gordon Phelps, along with Ray Berres, on from Sacra mento, and Walter Millies, up from Chattanooga. Stengel figures Berres Smoke THREE/// This time \ three Is not a crowd your eyes. Different tobaccos, different '|| and satisfying taste.LaAzoraalwaysbuilds # | La AZ O RA a better catcher than A1 Lopez, who was swapped to Boston. Buddy Hassett, who came to Brooklyn from the Yankees by way of Newark, hasn’t lived up to his price tag of $40,000 and two placers. He’s still being considered for first. At second is Vince Sherlock, a 300-hitter with Indianapolis ast year. He’s not doing much better than Hassett. Linus Frey is okey at short, but Jim Bucher Is none too dependable at third from which job Joe Stripp is holding out. If Bucher doesn’t make the grade, Stengel will call Fred Lindstrom in from the out field. The way they are lining up right now, however, Lindy is playing left, John Cooney from Indianapolis, center, and Randy Moore, another Boston acquisition, and Oscar Eck hardt are fighting for the right field post. Stengel knows what to expect of Moore, so* he’s using Eckhardt most of the time. * PAGE 17 Bobby Jones Blasts Away on Comeback Veteran Shoots Subpar Again in Practice for Links Meet.
