Leading Indiana chemists are scheduled to address the ninety first meeting of the American Chemical Society, to be held in Kansas City, Mo., April 13 to 17. TRUCKERS MUST FILE RATES BY TOMORROW New Law to Be Enforced in State, Commission Announces. The Motor Carrier Act of 1935 is to be enforced in Indiana start ing tomorrow, according to infor mation received by Charles L. Rid dle, Indiana Motor Traffic Asso ciation president, from the Inter state Commerce Commission. Application of tariff and rate schedules to the trucking industry is made by the act. Tariffs or schedules applying tt' each office, station and terminal concerned are required to be kept on file for public inspection at offices, stations and terminals by motor carriers subject to the act. STATE WPA PUBLICITY HEAD WINS PROMOTION James R. Branson to Assume Re gional Position. James R. Branson, publicity di rector for Works Progress Admin istration of Indiana, has been drafted by the National WPA Ad ministration. Indianapo lis attorney and chairman of the Young Republican League of Marion County, today announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for state senator from Marion County. Mr. Hartman is 36 and was ed ucated in local public and high school and Indiana and Benjamin Harrison law schools. He is a former precinct committeeman and delegate to the state con vention. He Is a member of the Masonic order, Knights Templar. Murat Shrine, Lawyers’ Association of Indianapolis, Indiana and Ameri can Bar Associations, Sigma Delta Kappa fraternity and has served on the speakers’ bureau of the Indianapolis Com munity Fund and Marion County Tuberculosis Association. INDIANA TENTH IN RELIEF AID High Ranking Results From State Local Fund Contributions. Indiana ranks tenth among the slates on the basis of its contribu tions toward the Federal emergency relief program in 1934, the Gov ernor’s Unemployment Relief Com mission announced today. Os a total of $34,727,293 of obli gations for carrying on direct and work relief and supplementary ac tivities, $11,958,169 or 34.4 per cent, was from state and local funds. Os this sum. only $131,510 or four tenths of 1 per cent, was from state funds. Local units contributed $11,826,659 or 34 per cent. The remaining 65 per cent, or $22,769,124, was contributed by the Federal government. Only •>' six New England states and Delaware, New York and lowa bore a larger share of the relief costs than did Indiana. NORTH SIDE REALTORS REPORT ACTIVE WEEK Seli 29 Properties; First Quarter Sales Pass 1935 Mark. John W. Robbins, North Side Realtors secretary, today had re ported sales of real estate for the first quarter of 1936 totaling $834,- 000, a gain of $284,000 over the same period in 1935. Sales ®f real estate for the past week reached $206,150. This figure w'as compiled from individual re ports made by members of the or ganization at a lupcheon yesterday in the Architects and Builders Building. Twenty-nine sales were reported for the w'eek at prices ranging from SISOO to $36,000. Gross sales of real estate last year amounted to $2,421,000 and first quarter sales were $600,000, Mr. Robbins said. A discussion of proo lems pertaining to realtors will be held Thursday in the Washington, it was announced. AIRPORT CHIEFS DENY CHARGES IN BULLETIN Private Aeronautical Lights Not Source of Trouble, They Say. Airport officials here today denied that private aeronautical lights situated in or near the city are a source of confusion to transport pilots, as charged in the current issue of the Air Commerce Bulletin. The report held that airports in both Indianapolis and Evansville had been criticised. POLICE JAIL ACTOR “Dr. X" Held by Marion Authorities to Answer Charges. By United Press MARION, Ind., March 31.—Dave Brookhart, known on the stage as “Dr. X." numerologist and analyst of family problems, had one of his ow-n to solve today. He was held in jail pending arrival of Buffalo. N. Y„ authorities, who issued a war rant for his arrest on second-de gree burglary charges. DOYTO DISBUSS STATE WELFARE AT WASHINGTON Indiana Security Plan to Be Laid Before Federal Administrators. Wayne Coy, acting administrator of the State Public Welfare Board, today was en route to Washington to discuss Indiana’s set-up for old age pensions and welfare with the Federal Social Security Board. Before leaving, Mr. Coy said per sonnel under the new board will not be selected until the Federal board has approved the Indiana welfare plan. “Within 20 to 45 days the actual state set-up should be in operation,” he said. Offices for the new board may be sought in a downtown office build ing. * Size of Staff Undetermined “We can not begin the selection of personnel or even know the num ber of workers required until we have received final approval of our plan,” he said. The Indiana public welfare act was given tentative approval by Washington authorities before it was passed by the last special ses sion of the General Assembly. Mr. Coy pointed out that it was necessary, under recent Supreme Court decisions, for each state to tell the Federal government what it intended to do in order to share in Federal funds, and then if those in tentions or plans were acceptable, the Federal funds would be matched with state dollars.
