FARM NOTES. (From 'Modern Farming.) ESTLMATING CORN IN A CRIB. To find the number of bushels of inshucked corn in a crib multiply the length of the crib by the width and then by the height, and divide the product by 5,000. The quotent will represent the bushels of un shucked corn. (LiJWxlH of crib di Vided by 5,000 is bushels of unshuck ed cor .) rTo Ind the number of bushels when the corn is shucked but not shelled, .multiply the length of the crib by the height, and divide the product by 4,300. (i@laWrH of crib divided by 4,300 is bushels shucked corn). To find the number of bushels when the corn Is shelled, multiply then length of the crib by the width and iby the height, and divide the product by 2,250. (.LWaIH of crib divided by 2,250 in :bushels shelled corn.) In each rule the dimensions of the crib for height, width and length must be in inches and not in feet or feet and Inches. SthALL PFOTIATOES FOMl SEED. This is a season of small potatoes, and the question is already being asked, it these small potatoes are suitable 'for next season's seed. The real objection of the use of the small seed is not the size of the tuber, but the continuous selection of small tubers, which means that in a few seasons'the small tubes thus select ed will come largely from hills pro ducing small tubers and so greatly reducing the yield. If your crop consists largely of small tubers this season have no fear in using them' for seed. But do not snake it a prac tice to selec tsmall potatoes one year -following another. I, .LIB. S1PAENWi OF CORN IN ROW. (What has your experience been in determining the best distance to leave corn in drill, planted in six toot rows. The land I am to put corn in next season (in the sugar belt) is first class, and I am going to get it in splendid physicial con dition before planting. It is land that has not had cane in it for sev eral years, and will not be fertilized. Would one-foot distance between the stalks be too close? Answer-The distance to leave the corn in drill in six-toot rows varies with the kind of land. Cane is usu ally very hard on the land, and corn, as a rule, does not do very much when directly preceded by that crop. I would suggest that you leave the stalks from twelve to sixteen inches, using your.ow nJudgment as to the strength of your land. Of course, if you were fertilizing ten inches might be sufficient. WEIGHT OF COR.N. What is the average weight ot an ear of corn as commonly grown- in southern ouaismana, both In the slip shuck and when shucked? Answer--The average weight of a bushel of corn When slip shucked is approximately eight pounds; if the shucks are not removed at all this weight can easily go to ninety pounds sometimes even more. A -bushel of corn in ear with shucks entirely re moved usually will weigh from sev enty to seventyfive pounds, depend ing on the moisture content. CHAXHBULAIN'S COLIC, CIJOI.
