RESULTS BOTAINED FROM A SELF-FEEDER. No man has ever been able to give a sensible reason for growing cotton to pay for bacon and lard, instead of growing cheap forage crops, and es pecially legumes, to raise hogs. No man has ever been able to give a plau'i'ble reason for' attempting, to grow hogs on pasture alone or on grain alone. Hog-raising can seldom be made profitable without thoroughly good, permanent pastures and temporary Igrazing crops, where the hogs can .obtain the necessary coarse forage an da large amount of the grain feed which is needed, at a small cost. 'Pa'ture grasses and forage crops, especially leguminous crops, that Swill grow healthy, vigorous hogs of agood quality must ever remain the - basic factor in economical pork pro rduction in the South; however, grian Smust not, on any account, be omitted ! from the daily ration. The difficulties in keeping pace with such demands may be appreciated when it Is un derstood that the cost of material entering into the manufacture of telephone equipment has prac. tically doubled, in addition to the abnormal in crease in the price of labor and the shortage of both labor and material with which to add to our facilities. Upon the declaration of war, the- Bell sys tem pledged its entire service unreservedly to the government. The demand from that source is already great and is increasing ho ; more over the extraordinary increase in telephne traf fic due to the unprecedented commercial and in dustrial activity incident to the war is also making itself felt. - The problem before us is a serious one and we realize the service may probably be slowed down during the coming months. We want you also to understand the situation and to know that the operators are serving you cheerfully and to the extent of their ability, but under difculties for . which there is no immediate remedy and which you cannot realize without visiting the operating room. We ask that you co-operate with to hebery. ing patience and care in the use qi the and by eliminating useless and frivolous CUMBkRLAND TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH COMPANY Incorporated necessary to grow hogs with the greatest profit. At least one-fourth of a full grain ration, or one pound to every 100 pounds of live weight, should Ibe giv en each day. When fed to pigs and you rhogs, the grain feed should be such as will furnish material for bone and-muscle, and nit such as will produce an excess fat. Theer should of course, be a gradual change from the nitrogenous, muscle-making foods given the pig to fat-making foods. We cannot afford to get a reputa tion to rproducing an unsatisfactory cercass such as is produced by grass es, cowpeas, soy beans and peanuts This, however, can ibe easily avoided by feeding some grain while on pas ture and by feeding a full grain ra tion for about three weks before slaughtering or marketing. The Mississippi Delta Station made three tests in which self-feeding was compared with hand-feeding. In test No .1 there were three-months old pigs in each lot. Lbt No. 1 was fed twice each day for 90 days on a ration of corn and tankage, balanced acording to a feeding standard. Lot No. 2 ate corn and tankage from sep arate compartments of the self-feed er. In test No. 2 younger pegs were used and the duration was only 75 days. In test No. 3 cottonseed meal was substituted for tankage and the duration was only 60 days. The following is a summary of the result obtained: "In all three tests the self-fed lots made better gains and consumed less feed than the hand-fed lots. Even when the cost of care is not consid ered, the profit per pig of the self fed lot was greater than the profit per pig of the hand-fed lot; in the first test, $2.80 greater; in the sec ond, $2.07 greater; and in the third, $1.10 greater. When the cost of care is included, the difference in favor of self-feeding is even greater; in the first case, $3.43; in the sec ond, $2.60; and third, $1.48. "In the first test the difference in cost of 100 pound gain was $1.74 in favor of the self-fed lot; in the sec ond test, $1.27; in the third, 82c. "The self-feeder is desirable in that it saves five-sixths the time .re quired by the old method of feeding two or more times a day in a trough. "It is desirable in that it insures better and cheaper gains. "It is desirable in that when kept filled with right feeds, it makes pos sible better and thriftier animals; at all times the pigs get the different elements the obdy needs, in the right proportion. "It is desirable in that it enables every man to feed a properly balanc ed ration to his pigs at all times." BRADFORD KNAPP, Chief of the Department. FOR A WEAK. STOMACH.
