St. Tlamnany Farmer 1A iD Am . . . . . A 4a Pseg dm hN "JONES, HE PAYS THE FREIGHT." The New-Orleans machine raiaes its hands in holy horror at the charge that the city's growth has been held back because of ring politics, Mayor Behrman pictures the wonderful advancement of the city (and we say this advisedly, because his picture never fails to be in it) and goes on to s.y that " ' * those responstble for b(ringing these things about are the splendid men of New Orleans, not the campaign orators of John M. Park er." He forgot to say that John 'M. Parker himself is a massive pillar of the superstructure. He forgot to say that in spite of machine control business intelligence, noted hospitality, social eclat and natural advant ages have forced the city's growth. But O, what a different growth might have been without machine control! The best paid mayor in America undoubtedly values his Job and is en ergetic in the interest of New Orleans on the cost plus 10 per cent prin ciple; but holding a job of that kind indefinitely requires the building of ,a machine that can deliver the vote. -That he has ably attended to this is Sshown by the undisputed statement that a short order service of twenty d.ve thousand votes is steaming hot and ready to be served on notice. It was that that cansed en-Governor Sanders, in his cutting speech in New Orleans last Saturday, to exclaim: "Is Behrman 25,000 times the man you are?" IS ANY ONE FOOLISH ENOUGH TO BELIEVE A MACHINE OF THIS KIND CAN BE KEPT UP WITHOUT ENORiMOUS COST TO THE CITY? Can any part of the city government function at its best when every action must be gauged by its political effect on the machine. Parker is not trying to discredit the city, HE IS TRYING TO BANVE IT FROM THE MAOHINE. None but the weak-minded can fail to see this, And he is trying to keep the state from being engulfed also. Is casting 25,000 solid votes by Bohrman giving the country a chance to select its own governor? The building of a machine throughout the state is much more difficult than building a machine in the city, because the Jdbe wont go around in the-small towns and the farmer has never been fond of rings. He has to pay the cost without getting any of the fat. But if the constitutional con vention is controlled by the New Orleans -organization the new Constic', tion will be an encyclopedia of ring domination. Advertising is the biggest asset of the business man, and a private trade mark ts exclusive. Yes, New Orleans has been well advertised, and its mayor has shared in that advertising with the persistency of a permanent fxture. To mention New Orleans or any undertaking in New Orleans without affixing the. photograph of the mayor would seem to be a dereliction as great as leav. ing the seal of state from an official state document. It remi'ds one of the old scales advertisement, "Jones, he pays the freight." It matters not whether it 'be paper, magazine or Saturday Evening Post with its millions of circulation, the seal of the city is there to remind you of "Jones,'he pays the freight." I PALE CHILDREN NEED GUDE'S PEPTO-MANGAN. Unnatural for Children to be Palo and Thin-Paleness Is Sign of Thin, Watery Blood. Pepto-Mangan Makes-Red Blood. Prepared in Idquid and Tablet Form -Both Possess Identical Medicinal Qualities. It is necessary for boys and girls to laugh, romp, play and enjoy them selves, for it is at that stage of life that the foundation is laid for future health. Prompt attention should be given to the child who seldom laughs, whose physical condition prevents playing like the other children, whose appetite is poor, and who tire3 easily. If the lassitude is due to poor blood, which is often the case, a simple, safe, and pleasant remedy is within- easy reach. Gudo's Pepto Mangan is just the tonic for pale, thin children. Gude's Pepto-Man gan contains the very ingredients that increase and enrich the blood, enabling it to supply the entire body with the sorely needed vigor, strength and vitality that make hap py, romping children. For the convenience cf the public Pepto-Mangan is prepared in tablet as well as liquid form. Both forms possess exactly the same medicinal properties. When you ask the druggist fo: Pepto-Mangan, look for the name "Gude's" on the package. If it is not there it is not Pepto-Mangan. Meridian Home Mixture and Blood and Bone Fertilizer. The farms, mines and factories cannot increase their output beyond the capacity of the railroads to haul their products. Railroads are now near the peak of their carrying capacity. Without railroad expansion-more en. gines, more cars, more tracks, more ter minals-there can be little increase in production. But this country of ours is going to keep right on growing-and the railroads must grow with it To command in the investment markets the flow of new capital to expand railroad facilities--and so increase production - there must be public' confidence in the future earning power of railroads.
