St. Tammany Farmer D. . MASON - - . ~er sad Prgme iMnedw as the Osemlavtm pdtese as 6e6a-dims Mtwm THE TRILL OF THE MOCKING BIRD IS HEARD FROM THE NEST OF THE BUZZARD. St. Tammany parish looks across the lake into the greatest city in the South. Pridefully it has waited for the time when skyscraping office buildings and great factories would call their sons to occupations not to be found in their home towns. Hence the opportunities of New Orleans have become our opportunities. The young men and the young womea. of St. Tammany know the great hotels of that city-the places of amus.i ment the famous eating places and the cabarets. That which is con sidered socially right in New Orleans has its effect upon the social cuE toms here. The morals of that city are breathed into the air of the piney woods. We are lifted up by the force of its greatness and we are be spattered with the corruption of its foulness. Then at least we can drown the ring's cry for local self-government with an appeal for home pro tection. Mayor Behrman is responsible for all the corruption in New Orleans, BECAUSE HE HAS THE POWER TO STOP IT. The people can not be fooled by claims that immorality does not exist. Peogle from the couu try know the city-too many visitors have had experiences there. The exposition of immoral dives given daily in the Times-Picayune have been condemned by the ring-but has the truth of it been denied Doesn't every one know that the T.-P. would not dare publish these things if they were not true? And doesn't everybody know that the object of that great paper is not to injure New Orleans but to do away with con ditions that are ruining the city? It wants Parker elected because it be lieves that he will save the city and that he will help to prosper both city and state. It was a pitiable thing for the people of the country to read in th~ States Mayor Behrman's attempt to twist the story of immorality in the T.-P. Into a slur upon the school children of that city. With such an in terpretation, every mention of proatitution in the city would be a slur upon the women of the city. The thought is utterly ridiculous. The trill of the mocking-bird comes from the nest of the buzzard. To protect the womanhood and the manhood of the city such foulness should 'be re moved. Instead of crying out against exposure, thanks should be given for an opportunity to suppress such evils. If they were already known to the officials, then the crime is that they existed afterwards. The people are too familiar with the fruitless efforts of the federal gov ernment in this direction and the successful defense of Tom Anderson to believe that there is any intention to 'better conditions in this respect. They are tired of pleading and waiting. THE DAY OF RECKONING HAS COME. Every father, every son, every brother in St. Tammany parish should go to the polls on the 20th and vote against the effort of this ring lo control the state. With all their love of home and right and Justice they should blast the chance of ever bringing into the country a sent.ment that will gnaw at the vitals of decency, make a plaything of morality and a political slave of you, to be delivered in bunches of 25,000 out of the hand of a political autocrat. This in the shame that caused Congressman Sanders to ask, "Is Behrman 25,000 times the man you are?" Commercial travelers are throw ing bouquets at the Central Hot,.l. Mrs. Coltora is winning a reputation for that hostelry and travelers are spreading the news abrcad. It is situated right at the depot. near the poetoflce and picture show and just the place for the man whose time is money. ,Mr. Whit Riggs announces that the new allotment of 1920 Dodge Cars has been received and are now on exhibition at his show room in Covington.
