tlie Cape. With this exception, had moderate Weather, but unfa

The Splendid. Jr. Lad rough, stormy weather the whole pas
sage. Jan. 16, in lat 13 X, Ion 130 W, encountered a terrific
gale, during which she carried away her mast and received
some other damage. Set a very small squaresail, which was the
only canvas on her for 9 days. CapU St. Claire describes the
gale as the most violent he ever experienced in the Pacific. An
idea of its strength may be formed from the fact that although
t:.was under such reduced sail nearly the whole time, the sloop
HiaJe the passage from Ceros Island in 10 days. Had the wind
from the southward and eastward till she imide the Islands
SaT the first land on the night of the 2:h, when within half a
mlie of Molokai. The night was unusually dark, and thunder
and lightning almost continual. Had the wind from S S W and
still blowing with considerable force. Put into Honolulu for re
pairs aud will sail again in a few days. During the gale she be
haved beautifully and shipped very little water. She Is a very
in.jil craft and appears better adapted to navigating rivers than
crowing oceans. Her crew all told, consists of 3 men.
Of American wlialers. we have the following very successful

that port on the lath March. The ship IXsdemona, 295 tons,
Sii'i'Ji. of X Iiedford, was daily expected to arrive, having taken
l'Hi M.'.s sperm; and the ship Minerva, 291 tons, wain, also of
N Br-d'ord. had taken 300 bbls sperm since she last left. The
tsydney brig Independence had likewise taken 10 bbls sperm.
1; will be in t he recollection of our readers that not many months
snce we published report after report of the teeming condition
of our waters, one whale rising under the Eastfield's forefoot,
and spouting into her bows, on her passage down the gulf to
Port p;er. And yet the Auckland merchants and ship-owners
