Hopper, Manager ccptancc of the bible in the public schools of that state. "Mauv ot the children in the public schools of this country are obsolutely igno rant of the real nature of God, or the elements of Christianity," says 1 one of the prime movers in t'-e new plan. With the variety of Gods j now in this Territory, it would he: difficult to see what would be the! outcome of a mixture of Gods and intellect. ADVANTAGE OF EDUCATION Vn must admit tliat many men have ex isted o f admirable dispiisition and virtue who, without learn ing, bv the almost divine instinct of their own mere nature, have been with their own record, as it were, moderate and wise men. We may even add this: that very often nature without learning has had more to do with leading men to credit and to virture than learning when not assisted by a good, natural disposition. And we might also contend that when, to an ex cellent and admirable natural dis position, there is added a certain system of training of education, than from that combination arises a n extraordinary perfection of character. The only way to reduce the cost of living is by dying. The Frisco Railroad Co., has been indicted for overcharges on coffin shipments. This is certainly a grave charge. In the- history of Kauai there I has never yet been a generous deed of more importance and everlast ing good to our young peopio, than the one which Rufus Spald ing has done in setting aside a certain sum of money, the inte rest of which will be spent in the education of worthy and ambitious young women, ine act or .Mr. Spalding is one which 1 he Gar den Island has advocated, to the elfect that a certain sum of money be donated by our philan thropists, the interest upon which would do the identical thing which Mr. Spalding's arrangements will do. Mr. Spalding's gift indicates thoughlfulness and consideration for his fellowinen which is cha racteristic of the man, and a hick of selfishness which is so rarely encountered among the class of men most able to duplicate his highly commendable act. Long may he live to enjoy the blessings of the beneficiaries of his noble gift. L. Y. And now Teddy says he be lieves in the presidential recall. Just let him wait a minute and see the people recall Taft and laud Wilson. Another funny thing about the American people is that they will shut your front door when the thermometer is 90 in the shade and leave it open when it is 30. A Discussion arose the other day as to whether a man can eat a quail every day for 30 days. It is not a question of days with Ye Editor. It is a question of quails. Abraham Lincoln has lost another cousin. This time it was Capt. David C. Hanks, of Illinois, 87 years old. This mortality among Lincoln's cousins i s something dreadful. The average life of a five dollar bill is said to be two years. Not being very intimate with Bill's life, habits and location, Ye Editor is not prepared either to deny or verify this statement. An exchange says that a sneak thief entered the room where a young lady was asleep and stole $25.00 from her stocking which she was wearing at the time. This was a literal interpretation of pull ing the leg. IT is said that in the last half century an average of twelve years has been added to the period of human life. And in the same period the cost o f keeping the breath going has more than kept up with the increased length of life. There is one thing about the single tax amendment that hasn't been fully brought out and when it is, will make the people think a few before voting for it, and that is, it removes the limit of taxation , which was placed upon it by con stitutional or legislative enact ment, u n d e r the single tax scheme, the tax power is unlimited An exchange says that Taft sailed from Wood's Hole, Oct. 13. He has probably arrived at another hole by this time. When the parcel post system is inaugurated January 1, a new series of postage stamps designed especially for the new service, will b e placed o n sale. Postmaster General Hitchcock has perfected arrangements for the engraving and manufacture of a series of twelve stamps of a novel size and design. These stamps will be somewhat larger than tne ordinary potage stamps and will be so distinctive in color and design as to prevent possible confusion with the stamps used for other classes o f mail. There will be three series of de signs in the issue. The first series will illustrate modern methods of transporting mail, one stamp showing the mail on a railway train, auotner an ocean mail steamship, a third stamps o f the automobile's now used in the postal service, and, a fourth the dispath of mail by aero plane. In the second series there will be shown at work in their several environments the four great classes of postal employes, namely postoffice clerks, railway mail clerks, city letter carries and rural delivery carriers. The third series will give four industrial scenes, showing the principal sources 'of the products that are to be trans ported s o extensively by parcel post. Who was the greatest woman in all history? Two hundred teachers answered the question and with enthusiasm a n d unanimity the Judges awarded the prize to the one who made this reply: "The wife of the farmer of moderate means who does her own cooking, washing, ironing, sewing, brings up a family of boys and girls to be useful members of society, and finds time for intellectual improvement."
