THE MAIN ISSUE
Under the above heading the
Maui News has the following com
ments: There is one real danger that
Matii republicans have to guard
against. That danger is tl e losing
sight of the real issues of the com
ing campaign. Thus far there has
been perfect harmony in the ranks,
because every republican could
gladly subscribe to the principles
for which the party in Hawaii has
declared itself.
Now there are signs that some
of them arc losing sight of the end
to be attained. Some are allowing
selfish motives to interfere with
their best lovalty to party and good
government. Because certain per
sons are alleged to have done this
or that, other pet sons are urging
retaliatory measures.
This will not do. It is not pa
triotic. It is not the proper spirit.
If you do not like the wav things
are handled, say so, and work for
vhat vou believe is right. But in
the name of harmony do not be
misled by arguments that might
weaken the party's strength.
The enemies of republicanism are
but too anxious to foster a weak
ness that may profit them later. A
democratic county committee meet
ing was held this week. The re
port has now gone out that the
Maui democrats will have but two
men in the field, and will throw
the balance of their strength to re
publican candidates. And the re
publican candidates they propose
to support, are the candidates who
think they have a grievance, and
to get themselves elected, would
lend themselves' to the enemy to
the defeat of their own party. Also
these democratic schemers plan to
support Kuhio in the primaries,
not for the purpose of helping him,
but because the word has gone out
that Rice is more than likely to be
elected in the primary. Bv helping
split the Republican strength, they
insure McCandless, their real can
didate, a chance in the finals.
A similar sheme is also being
worked by the Progressives, and
for like reason. Maui voteis are
being urged by the Carter hench
men to vote for everybody except
Rice for delegate in the orimaries.
A united Republican front is the
greatest fear of both McCandless
and Carter. Their only chance is
in a split in the republican ranks
that may give them a show. But
they will never get this chance if
every republican voter will consid
er only the big things, the things
that really count in the campaign.
They are two
First: To send a man to Wash
ington as a delegate who will stav
on the job and get things done.
That man is Rice. It is not Kuhio
for he has had ten years in which
to prove himself, and he has not
made good. He has discredited
the Hawaiian people in Washing
ton. Second: To support for the leg
gislature, only republican candi
dates who are big enough to not to
try to "throw down" their own
partv because they may think some
one has not treated them right
The candidate who will openly or
secretly ally himself with the cne
my for the sake of getting the noni'
ination at the expense of his par
ty, is certainly not the man to be
trusted to help frame the laws of
this territory.

PROGRESS
TUNNEL A! QAHU
There being a number of stock
holders of Oahu Sugar Company
on Kauai, the following concern
ing the big new tunnel being put
through there, which was recently
given out at Honolulu, should be
of interest:
The July excavations in the main
tunnel of the Waiahole Water Com
pany through the Koolau range
totaled 626 feet. J. F. C. Hagens
stated yesterday that 8290 feet of
the main tunnel i s braclicnliv
nished, with only 6153 feet still
to be done. He s.iid that the en
gineers believe that they may be
gin to strike water when the south
tunnel is in another half mile or
so.
Preparations are now being made
to take care of the watet when they
find it. There may be new irriga
tion supplies available for the use
of Oahu plantations by December
or January. The new ditches will
be ready long before the main tun
nel cuts through the range.
At the end of luly Hawaiian Su
gar (Makaweli) paid dividends
aggregating 30,000.

Bonus For Laborers
One of the first benefits to be
derived from the increase in sugar
prices will accrue to the plantation
laborers. By an agreement between
the laborers and the planters a
sliding scale of salaries is arranged
by which the laborers will receive
a bonus in wages ci: all sugar
marketed in excess of the price of
$70 a ton Inasmuch as the prices
pre now in excess of those figures
the laborers will all profit as well
as I lie planters.
