and higher chiefs, many intending
memories cling luvuml it. In con
nection with the paper, Mr. S. V.
Wilcox gave pome interesting recol
lection of a boyhood visit to the
home oJ Delora Knpule, tlievJilow
ed Queen of Kaumu-alii, the last
King of Kauai.
The third paper of the. evening
was one by C. S. Dole, on the Kn
waihau Hui, a Hawaiian coopera
tive venture, under the patronage
of King Kalakaua, for the cultiva
tien of cane on the mnuka lands of
Kapaa, out of which the Makee
Sugar Co. has grown. The writer
gave a very graphic and racy ac
count of the ups and downs of this
novel venture, showing an insight,
sympathy and humor which made
it, in treatment, as well as in sub
ject matter, one of the most inter
esting papers yet read before the
Toward the end of the meeting it
transpired that Judge Hofgaard had
a very valuable paper up his sleeve
in the '"Reminiscences of the widow
of Koolau" the famous leper insur
gent of Kalalau.
On the insistent demand of the
Society he finally produced it, and
it proved, indeed, to be a very ab
sorbing, and of course, authorita
tive, first hand account, of the ex
periences; dangers, exploits, priva
tions and sufferings, as well as the
devotion and h eroism of that fam
ous outlaw and his faithful wife.
The story was listened to with
breathless interest, and the Society
counts itself fortunate to stand spon
sor for such valuable material.

the taste of grease. They now are tasty and crisp,
They are made more digestible, for Crisco is all veRe
