Beet Sugar Production

Washington, Dec. 5 The Depart
ment of Agriculture in a prelimi
nary report on the sugar beet indus
try estimates a production of 918,
800 short tons of sugar during the
current campaign. The area har
vested amounted to 080,000 acres,
and the beets, G,57S,0OO short tons.
This is the largest acreage and ton
nage of beets ever harvested in the
United States, and the sugar pro
duction exceeds the highest preced
ing crop, that of 1915, by more
than 4 1,000 tons. Seventy-four fac
tories are in operation in the United
States as against sixty-seven in 1915,
and the average price paid for beets
this year is $0.17 per ton as against
$5.07 in 1915. During the past five
years the United States has consum
ed alxmt 4,000,000 ton's of sugar
