The Banner Rainfall
There are probably few places in
the world Hint run outdo the record
of Mount Waialeale for rainfall;
Rfil inches' is the record for one
year. At Kokce, 10 miles away
and at a somewhat lower elevation
the rainfall was only 77 inches.
The maximum daily rainfall
recorded for the Island was '25.5
inches at Wainiha. It is quite
likely however that Waialeale could
have gone Wainiha something bet
ter if there had been a daily record

The Waimea Church
A special meeting of the Waimea
Hawaiian church was held Sunday
afternoon at which three children
were baptized, the Lords supper
was administered, and Mr. Sam
Keliinoi was leceived into member
ship on reaffirmation of faith and
made one of the deacons of the
church.
Rev. J. M. Lydgate assisted by
Uev. S. K. Kaulili conducted the
services.
The Climate of Kokee
An investigation of climatic and
living conditions made at Kokee
with a view to its adoption as a
company and recreation region,
shows a maximum temperature of
74 and a minimum of W with a
mean of 43. There have bf'eii
mornings lately when we thought
it, was 30 right here in Lihue!
Dependent
It seems, according to the (!ov
ernor's report, that we imported
last year 23,52s boxes of oranges,
22,708 bags of onions and 85,5S(i
bags of potatoes. Where oh where
is the small farmer? And what
will happen when we are cut olT
from the mainland?

Events in Russia have of late so
it u mbled on one another's heels
tint the American's natural mood
is one of bewilderment. It is hard
among contlicting reports, to judge
the true state of affairs, still harder
to predict the future. For it is
only fin the basis of first hand
knowledge of the Russian people
that any conjectures nie possible on
this question, which is of the most
momentous concern to the United
Slates. Mr. Charles Edward Rus
sell, member of the Root commis
sioned to Russia, in the third of his
series of articles on "The New Rus
sia in the Making," which appears
in Hearst's Magazine for December,
gives a striking picture, remarkable
for detail and insight, of the little
known Russian people themselves
the peasants, on whom the fate of
the country now hangs. His ob,-
sei vat ions are worthy of careful
st ml v, for they overthrow complete
ly the common notion of the Rus
sian peasant, and will force many
people to reverse their opinion on
the character and future of the
Russian nation. Our clearest pic
tures have hitherto been derived
from novels written in the nine
teenth century. Rut much water
has run under the mill; the novels
describe conditions which, since
the emancipation of the serfs, have
gradualy ceased to exist. In place
of these antiquated ideas. Mr. Rus
sel gives us a view, photographic in
its completeness, of the real Rus
sian peasant of today The study
which he has made of the under
lying causes of the recent revolu
tion the gradual change in 'the,
peasant's mode of life, the chain
(if cause and effect through which
the autocracy wrought its . own
doom prove that the new Russia
did not spring into being in a clay.
He pricks the bubble of the belief
that the Russians are a nation of
ignorant barbarians, unfit to work
out a destiny of self government ;
and he draws an interesting paral
lel between the conditions making
for individualism in the United
States and those which have gone
to develop a strong social sense in
Russian people. So cogent an ac
count of facts and forces now at
work, furnish the foundation of
actuality, on which alone calcula
tions as to the future of the Rus
sian republic can be based.

Hawaiian f07, Part Hawaiian 907,
Portuguese 971, Chinese (ISO,

From the looks of the hack yards

WILL (ireat Britain at last aban
don its inconvenient coinage system
and adopt a decimal system? The
Institute of Bankers and the associa
tion of Chambers of Commerce have
unanimously agreed upon a plan
that is simple and that could be
easily effected. The pound sterling
would remain the unit, but would
lie divided into one thousand
'"mils." What is now the shilling
would be fitly "mils." There
would be coins of one, two. three,
four, live and ten "mils." Thus
the only interference with the pre
sent system would be that with the
penny, which would dilTer but little
from four "mils'. "
