Among tho many books, good, bad
and indlfforent, which nro tho out
come of tho war, tho ono which Is
different from nil tho rest, is ono oiv
titled "Frrfginonts from Franco," by
Captain Druco Balrnsfnthor. It is a
book of graphic caricatures, reflecting
on every pago a vivid picture of
trench life, but lighted up with tho
humor of tho situation as only tho
man with long oxperlonco could sco
It.
Captain-Rairnsfnthcr went to tho
front with no thought of presenting it
in picture, and in tho first instance
his sketches 'were merely for tho en
tertainment of himself nnd conirads;
but these graphic and entertaining
sketches gradually leaked out to the
public through illustrated Journals and
met such Instant appreciation that
there was no longer any chanco of tho
artist hiding his talents under
the trench bushel; and from that tlmo
on his growing cllcntolo of patrons
waited eagerly from week to wook for
those pictorial Illustrations from tho
front.
Finally these Impressions have been
gathered up aiuLpubllshod in substan
tial book form, with sultablo titles
and inscriptions, to bo seen and en
joyed by tho whole world.
And this book has reached Kauai;
the only copy, so far as wo have heard,
being in tho hands of Mr. E. H. W.
Ilroadbcnt, who is loaning it out in tho
interest of tho Red Cross, Just calling
attention to this bit of verso on tho
titlo pago:
Now war, is war,
And what is more,
Somo way its bound to find you;
If in your purso
It might be worse,
Just let mo once remind you.
So if you look
Within this book,
A quarter leave behind you.
These quarters, wo may explain,
have already mounted to a nice llttlo
sum foftho benefit of tho Red Cross,'
and the Interesting book still makes
tho rounds.
