The inauguration of a regular
Ma tsoV freight and passenger ser
vice for .Kauai is an important
mile-stone in the progress of Kau
ai. It is significant in two direc
tions. As a menus of bringing to
our shores our fair share of the
tourist trade of the Islands it
ought to mean a new era for Kau
ai. 1 Unquestionably the discom
forts of the Inter-Island steamers,
the menace of the Kailai channel,
and the horrors of the midnight
landing. at awilivili have more
than off-set the ckarms and nt:
tractions of Kauai and have kept
away many who would otherwise
have .come. ov at length these
drawbacks will be practically
eliminated. That ought to mean
a great mauy more tourists for us.
It; will also be a convenience
and advantage for us to be able to
secure passage to the Coast from
our own home port without tire
soine and expensive delays iu Ho
nolulu, waiting, more or less in
definitely, on a chauce.
WHAT ARE WE COM IXO TO?
In the matter of household ser
vants, it looks as though we
were facing a new era. Hereto
fore this has been the land of
cheap and fairly efficient servants,
so that no one, of even moderate
income, need do much household
drudgery.
ft looks now however, as though
the ordinary housewife, in cir
cumstances anything short of a
millionaire, would have to face
the prospect of doing her own
work, or at least a good part of it.
We have grown used to order
ing almost anything we wanted,
from christening robes .to coffins,
from Honolulu. And bo wo have
fallen back on Honolulu for cooks
and other household servants.
But, bless your heart! Servants
don't grow on road-side bushes in
Honolulu anymore than they do
in the country, ami what servants
theYe are there, hold their heads
very high and reply "Go to the
country! What do you take us
for?"
So we wait for something to
happen, and lead the simple life,
and look back with foud regrets
on the bygone days of ease and;
luxury.
The newly organized House
wives League at first were jauntily
confident that they could handle
the situation, and convince the
hesitant servants by a good heart-to-heart
talk. But they found
that such tactics cut very little
figure with the. Orientals.
Now they are confident that the
sure remedy is the "Seandanavian
maid of all work from the Middle
West who can do more work in a
day than a whole fleet of Orien
tals." Well may-be ;but .they are far
ther away and harder to find than
what we have. And would any
Rcandanavian young lady with
blue eyes and blonde hair, would
she conescend to serve in .a kit
chen where an Orieutal had Worked?
THE PUBLIC SCHOOL DAY
in
ia of
(Continued from Page 1)
words, teachers have 175 vacation
days and i'90 working days per year.
One' of the reasons why taxpayers
and legislators throughout the entire
country, in previous years, have been
reluctant to advance teachers' sala
ries is' because of the short school day
and the long summer vacation. At
the' session of the Hawaiian Legisla
ture last spring; the Chairman of the
Senate and . House Finance Commit
tees distinctly and forcibly stated
that they were recommending the pro
posed increase of 33 in teachers'
salaries at that time with the plain
understanding that an increase in
efficiency would accompany the
crease in salary. This Instance
given as typical ot the attitude
the taxpayer and Legislator.
The additional thirty minutes in the
morning is particularly desirable iu
Hawaii where" the morning hours are
the best hours of the day for mental
work. Up to the present, time, the
Territory has permitted alien foreign
language schools to capture and ex
ploit the very best hours of the day
for teaching purposes; namely, the
early morning hours. The great ma
jority" of principals and teachers are
strongly in favor of utilizing this
morr.irig period.
A distant disadvantage of Hawaii's
ibnormally short Bchool day lies In
the fact that it creates a high-tension
nervous atmosphere. Modern educa
tors 'are unanimous in declaring that
the ideal school day is one in which
periods of intensive study and recita
- , , r ,
tion alternate with perio.ds of physical
activity, recreation, shop and garden
work, hand . work, etc. This is so
called Gary or Platoon" plan; also
called the "work-study-play" plan. It
was thoroughly presented by Dr. F.
F. Bunker of the Federal School Sur
vey Commission, during his visit here,
before numerous public-, and profes
sional audiences. This Is the plan
which he will recommend in the Sur
vey Report. ,
The present action of the Depart
ment is merely a first step toward the
realization of the standard modern
public school day, a school day which
tends to free the teacher from ner
vous strain -and to make the atmos
phere of the school-room normal,
wholesome and happy.
The new rules governing marking
and .promotions reduce the correction
of papers etc. by the teacher to a
minimum.
If the Department had wished to
evade its plain responsibility or to be
lazy or indifferent,- the entire matter
could have been held for another year,
awaiting the Survey Report and its
specific recommendations. The opin
ion was general, however, not only
among principals and Supervising
Principals that this step toward in
creasing school efficiency and returns
to the taxpayer might just as well be
taken at this time, to become effective
in September. .
Ill Teacher Representation
We . feel particularly grieved at the
present agitation because of the im
plied charge .that the opinions of the
teachers are not desired, or consider
ed. The facts are, that during the
