SENATE MET TODAY Punned ine of The ll'Hiv Apprnprln tlon .McHKurc. The Penate punned the Holme bill this morning making appropriation for the exeniHn of the bund In travelling to the other Inlands. The bill punned sec ond reading. A concurrent resolution was received from 'the House, providing that the laborers on public works were not to be paid less than $1,110 a day. Action was deferred until Saturday. The House bill appropriating $12,000 for the reimbursement of the Coney es tate for lands taken for public Improve ments on Tantalus was passed second rending. Some discussion ensued over this measure. The Senate committee on public lnnds and public Improve ments reported that under the condition of the will of the late J. H. Coney, the sale of lands had to be confirmed by the court. No such confirmation had been secured so the committee recom mended the tabling of the bill. Sen utor AchI offered an amendment pro viding that the appropriation "was made, subject to confirmation by the court of the transfer of lands. This amendment was added to the bill which was passed Its second reading. The report of the Senate's conference committee on the Eighteen Months' measure was tabled to await the action of the House. House bill No. 10 mak ing appropriations for unpaid bills of the Board of Health was passed second reading. A recess until 3 p. m. was taken. ANOTHER BILL PASSED The House this morning passed the eighteen months' appropriation bill on third reading, and It .now goes to the Senate. A number of amendments have been made and another conferece committee will very likely be needed. At noon the House adjourned to to morrow, to give members of the con ference committee opportunity to work. The loan bill was not taken up. It Is now proposed to bring it up tomorrow morning and pass It. OIG SUIT BEGUN The First National Bank has brought a suit on a $50,000 note against Jesse M. McChesney and R. W iMcChesney, naming H. Hackfeld & Company and M. W. McChesney and Sons, Limited, as garnishees. The note was made on March 29, 1901 and was for $50,000 at "Vi Per cent Interest. The plaintiff al leges that $37,557.20 of the money Is still due and asks for Judgment for the amount with Interest alleged to be due. BOOTH FIRE. INQUEST. A fire inquest Is to be held this after-, noon at 3 o'clock at the police station to determine the cause of the lire that destroyed the Booth residence on Paci fic Heights last month. The Inquest Is called at the request of the underwrit ers. There was some question raised as to the origin of the lire arid the un derwriters expressed the desire to have the matter go on public record. MAIL FOR COAST SATURDAY-. The S. S. Nevadan will sail about noon Saturday for San Francisco. She will take mall. LAKE WAS SENTENCED. Stephen Lake was given 12 months In jail this morning by Judge Davis for stealing goods from the Glrdler place. CONTINUED THE CASE. Louis Gomez a Porto Riean was tried this morning on a charge of stealing nn umbrella. When the prosecution closed its case, Judge Davis said that he did not consider that the prosecu tion had made out a case. It had failed to prove ownership of the um brella and therefore had failed to show that the article had been stolen. The court said he would continue the case In order to give the prosecution a chance to try and prove this point. The case was continued until Saturday. THE JOKES OF OUR RULERS. When the president was In Kansas Secretary Root received a request from the people of Qulncy, III., that the mon itor Arkansas stop at that town on its way down from the exposition cere monies. Mr. Root handed the tele gram to the president, who repeated It to Secretary Moody In Washington, adding: "Root says be has no monitor named Arkansas, but thinks you have one In your department. If not, he suggests that you try the postmaster- general," and the president added In structlons that the monitor visit every city on the Mississippi where it could find navigable water, because he want ed the public to see one of the modern floating fortresses. The monitor went aground through the falling of the waters of the Mississippi. In the mean time Secretary Root left the presi dent's part and returned to Washington while Secretary Moody Joined the pre sident, and on May 12 the president sent a telegram to the secretary of war! saying: "Moody reports that the monitor Arkansas Tias run aground In the Mississippi, and is likely to De laid up thore indefinitely In consequence of your recommendations.
