Tlrthleth year of Kuangshu, twelfth moon, third day (May 17, 1904.) FIFTEEN DAYS TERRIBLE CONDITION OF THE RESCUED CREW OF ITALIAN ARK SAN PIETRO. NEW YORK, Julv 23. With the cap tain dead In the cabin, the mate uncon scious and dying and the crew fifteen days without food, the Italian bark San Pletro was succored about 100 miles northe'sst of the Madeira islands on July 8th by the Hamburg-American liner Tenedos, Which arrived at this port today. The Tenedos had taken an extreme southward eoure fvom Gibraltar on July 6th to avoid Icebergs. It was about 7 o'clock in the morning when the San Pltro showed on the ho. rlzon, staggering like a drunken thing, her sails all set, sweeping from port to starboard at the will of a light wind, all reckoning lo'st and a crew so fam ished they could not man the wheel. Captain Auble made out a flag of dis tress at the forepeak of the San Pletro and stopped his engines. There came a faint hail from the bark A yawl boat swung slowlv from her davits and left her side. Two skeleton like men sank to the bottom of the yawl as rhe tossed up to the liner's side. They could not speak. Chief Ocer carber scrambled down a ladder and while the passengers leaned over the rail put his ear close to the lips of one of the men. "Water! Fifteen days! Food!" and the man fainted. The liner's boat, load ed with provisions and water, started fnn tViA fffin piotrn. As It came along side, ten living skeletons staggered from the deck to the side and starea siupiu- ly down at their rescuers. The San Pletro was bounu out oi fnntavirlen TTrncruav. to Genoa, Italy. Two days out, Captain iSchffln, stricken with fever died, ane mate wu un?i taken 'sick. For a week 'he directed the course of the mess bunk, uut tne ioou had given out, and he lapsed Into un consciousness. I After that the water gave out. Flags , of distress already flying for four days, were unnoticed by snips max puseu within two miles. The sea was calm and the sun shone faotlv. No rain canle. LOUIS WORLD'S FAIR PLAY GROUNDS. It. was early decided by the directors of the St. Louis World's Fair to make something more of the "Pike" than a mere highway of mirth and follv. In the beginning it was determined to exclude everything of a questionable nature and to allow no exhibitions to which 'parents might not safely take their youngsters. ThSrr-agoln preference was given to exhibitions of an educational nature. Tbe'se two point's, in the main, mark the difference between 'the IChicago "Midway" and the St. Louis "Pike." For Instance, at Chicago they had an Irish Village. At. St. Louis there is also an Irish Vlllnre and scenes from Irish life, but the name of this enter prise Us "The Irish Industrial Exhibit." And this designation is not a mis nomer for there are on display a large number of features which give visitors a better Idea of the resources and Industries of the Emerald Isle than a months visit from Queenstown 'to Lon donderry. The exhibit Is one of the most famous and valuable collections of the Fair. It comprises articles around which are woven historical legends, as well as heirlooms of famous families, which have been handed down from genera tion to generation for centuries. 'Besides 'these, there are manufactured goods lace, women, ribbons, pottery, silver and glassware, also an exhibit of the mining industries of the country, and a series of Irish homes ar.d cottages EDUCATION Amusement Is not lacking, but the'iGS, page 52, cnier iaea is eaucation. jne nears the famous Shandon Bells; see Blarney Castle and .House of Parliament at Dublin, and a most Interesting repro duction of the ancestral cottage of the late President 'McKlnley, the original of 'which was occupied by his grand father. This cottage Is so striking a feature and so exact a repllcn. Inside and out, that it has been chosen by the official photographer as one of the views to be shown in the "Forest City" series of World'a Fair Art portfolios, which are' being distributed to our readers on terms so easy as to place these splendid educational .ai t works within tho reach of. all. As already announced the price of the portfolios is 25 cents each, but our readers are privileged to secure them at the nominal sum of ten cents each to cover the cost of handling, wrapping, addressing and mailing. il is only necessary to send or bring us ten cents with coupon clipped from our an nouncements and any part Issued will be promptly furnished. It should be borne In mind that these Attacks of Colic, cholera morbus, large, finely-executed views cover every feature of the Fair there are 4S0 of them in all 30 portfolios each contain ing sixteen views. ' Hundreds of our readers are wisely securing eooh part as Iteued, so that the series will be complete. Seven parts now ready. BAND CONCERT.
