Public In struction: Dear Sir: I beg ta Inform you that at the recent examinations held in East man College I attained an average of 91 per cent. You are nware of the fact, I presume, that I received all of my edu cation in Hawaii and at the public schools of Walhee and Walluku, Kame hameha and the Normal Schools. I have always been proud of the pub lic schools of Hawaii and I am proud er or having been an Instructor In them. The result of my examinations has been a cause for general comment on the excellence of our schools, and I am after asked the questions: "Where did you learn to speak English?" "Do you speak English in your country?" ."Do you have schools like we have?" Now Mr. Atkinson will you be kind enough to send me some of your sur plus literature concerning the schools? I am surprised at the profound Ignor ance of these people concerning Uncle Sam's newly acquired territory. With the coming literature I shall be able to enlighten them on the subject. I am respectfully, W. K. .MAKAKOA. "Makakoa always showed signs of be ing partlrjtfirlj- bright," sa'd Superin tendent Atkinson this morning, "and it is gratifying to find that he is doing so well. He is in every sense a credit to Hawaii and he will be an object lesson to the people who are studying with him as to the sort of people we have lt nuwaii.
