The Board of Health yesterday afternoon discussed sanitary condi tions, though the Palama proposition did not come up. Fernandez called attention to sewer gas on King street. President Pinkham said there were not enough sewer connections to keep the sewers free and Plumbing Inspector Keen said that there were not enough flush tanks. He thought there should be such a tank every 200 feet. Dr. Wayson said that the Board should have control of the garbage and sewer departments and Fernandez agreed with this. Pinkham said he thought the condition of the city was pretty good considering, all the circumstances, and expressed satisfaction with the manner in which country towns had taken up sanitary work. Fernandez brought up the cemetery question again, calling attention to the fact that grave diggers usually disturb corpses long interred when preparing a new grave in the local cemeteries. It was agreed that President Pinkham will call a meeting of those interested in the various cemetery associations. Dr. W, B. Deas was confirmed as government physician on Maui, and the Board made. short work of the Kamehameha School applica tion for leave to keep pigs, adopting a motion of Dr. Wayson, in con formity with the Board's last action, that the piggery be not allowed. Approval was voted of a license to Dr. Minnett Burnham, on the favorable report of the board of medical examiners. She is about to take charge of the Chinese Hospital temporarily. J. K. Waiamau was appointed sheriff of Kalawao county, on the rec ommendation of Superintendent McVeigh, at a salary of $40 a month from September 1. The president stated that Waiamau's salary of $72 a month as assistant superintendent would now be cut down to $60, making his two salaries combined $100 a month. Captain De mens, formerly of the Russian acnif now representing a colony of fifty fami lies of actual farmers, Is visiting the Territory, looking over the labor condl t ons and the opportunities of acquiring land in the Islands. The families he represents came out of Southern California a short time ago with a view of settling down thcr. but finding the conditions dicerent from what had been represented to them, decided to send a representatlv to Ha waii and investigate for themselves. Both the men and the women are of a large hardy type, brought up as farm ers. They are all vegetarians and eschew meat. According to Captain Demens they are very prolific, raising large families, who are all. trained to work the soil for their living. They are of a very peaceful and Industrious mind, their main desire being that of securing a piece o'f land for themselves and family. Captain Demens came up with Sec retary Atkinson last week and took a look at the different pieces of land that the government will have to offer for settlement in the nar future. From Kauai th Captain will go to Hawaii, where he "will visit Kona and Olaa, In which district there are yet a consid erable area not turned over to corpora tions or Individuals as a whole. Ill AND HIIIV A cheerful guest is the product of cheerful surroundings. And an electric light makes a contented spirit. Sadness and shadows are by-products of nature. You have to work them over very thoroughly to get the real value out of them; while cheerfulness and light are natural values that bring blessing without toil. Everybody welcomes a beam of real sunlight or a flood of manufactured sunlight, the Mourner as well as the Merry Heart. In fact to surround grief with brightness is to inevit ably lessen its force. Use electric light and be happy all the time. 9f H I 1 Hawaiian Electric Co., Ltd. Office, King and Alakea Streets.
