THE MEN AT THE OLYMPIAN
GAMES IN 1J0G AND 1900.
The American teum which Is to con
test in the Olympic guinea ,ut Athens
from April 22 to May 2 will not be the
equal of the one which went to Paris
in 1900. This Is not because athletics
art? at a low ebb In this country now,
but because of the length of time which
jthe trip will involve few college men
will bo allowed to go, niul the team will
not anywhere near represent the ath
letic strength of the country.
I To one who Is familiar With the rec
ords of the athletes who made up the
1900 train, composed almost entirely of
college undergraduates, It will be seen
at once that the members of the pros-
.ent team are weaker In nearly every
event than the 1900 team. There is but
In single event In which the 190C team
is better than the 1900 team, and. In
only a few are the records equal. In
'nil of the others tho 1900 athletes were
I far superior to the members of the 190S
.team.
The team which went to Paris con
sisted of such sprinters as Duffey, of
Georgetown; Jnrvls, or Princeton, and
iTewkesbury, of Pennsylvania; hurd
ilors like Kraenzleln, Pennsylvania's
world's champion, and McLoan, the
Michigan llyer; an Invincible high
jumper in uaxtor, cv iYnnsylvnnla; a-
quartet of distance runners in Orton
and Grant, of Pennsylvania, and Cro-
gan, of Princeton, and Bray, of Wil
liams, all of whom could more thnjj
hold their own with Sullivan nnd Light-

From the above it will be seen that
In only a single event Is tho 1900 team
superior to thnt of 1900. This is the
(broad jump where Prlnsteln is credit
ed with better figures th,nn Kraenz
leln. Hut no sane' person would over
pick Prlnsteln beat Kraenzleln.
Prlnsteln's record was not accepted for
more than a year and, there nre mnny
persons who still think It should not
bo allowed. There was a high wind
blowing when It was made, and the
take-off was springy. Furthermore
Prlnsteln hns not been able to jump
within a foot of that mark since.
In tho 100 yards, the quarter mile
and the shot put the records nre equnl.
But In two of these events the 1900 ath
letes have since made records which
the 190G men could not nppronch. Duf
fey with his subsequent record of 9 3-R
for the 100 yards and Long with his
work mark of 47 seconds Hut for tho
quarter mile are both superior to
Schick or Hahn In the 100 yards or Hlll
ninn In the quarter mile. In the hur
dles Leavltt and Friend, of the pres
ent team, would be mere novice If pit
ted against Kraenzleln. The same Is
true in tho high Jump, where Baxter
was far superior to Kerrigan. In tho
half and mile runs the superiority of
the 1900 men was n'most as decisive.

man Interceded. Six were concerned In

a follow countryman to death. "One
was convicted of murder in the second
degree and got a life sentence. The

view that the sentences were just and
ought to stand.

CHINAMAN CAUGHT STEALING.
A Chinaman was caught stealing in
an untenanted house yesterday at Uni
on street and Adams Lano. A woman
saw the man climbing ovor a fence
and notified R. H. Trent, who dispatch
ed Joe Leal to tho scene. The China
man had left, leaving his push cart in
front of the place. Leal sat down to
wait the arrival of the Chinaman. In
due time ho returned for tho cart nnd
Leal gave chase and put the man un
der arrest after n chase of some
blocks. The man gave his name at the
police station as Ah Sam.
