Secretary Mott-Smith has just com pleted tho arrangements for Gover nor Frear, Director Newell -and party" to visit tho island of Molokai. They will not go to the Settlement at all but will make tho trip simply to allow Mr. Newell to see tho exceptionally fine opportunity for the reclamation of arid land existing on the island. Perhaps tho most Important place in all the Islands for Mr. Newell to seo is tho section .of Molokai where the American Sugar Company made such a failure. It will be 'remember ed that the failure was due to the fact that when the company tried to obtain water from artesian wells, it was'so brackish that it cou"ld not bo used for irrigation of cane. The hills behind this land, however, have plen ty of water and it is believed that by the establishment of a proper system of dams and ditches, Irrigation could be provided that would reclaim for agricultural purposes nearly G0.200 acres of land which is now good only for grazing. The majority of this land Is under leaso at present, much of It being in one large crown lease which dates back to 1888 and. docs not expire till 1918. It will probably bo somo time' before any money for reclamation can be obtained from the Federal Government, so it may be possible that this will bo one of tho first schemes which Mr. Newelft service will tako up. Tho trip to Maul will be made on the Mikahala, which will touch at La haina for tho party when it comes back from Hawaii on tho Mauna Kea on October 17. They will bo landed at Kaunakakai and then bo picked up again in time to bring them to this city on October 20. Mr. Smith stated that he did not be Hevo that it was right to prevent a homesteader from receiving title for so long a time. He stated that even six years was too long. When a younc man took up land for homestead pur poses he believed that o should obtain title In full In a short period and that this would be one of tho thincs which would bring tho right sort of men to apply for land. In response to questions on the sub ject, John Hind, of Kohala, stated that It was impossible for a homestead er to grow cano profitably. Fine Job Printing, Star Office. s? 1 LAND The political situation In Honolulu today is more chaotic than over. Ad miral George C. Beckley announced himself today as a candidate for treas urer, Independent, joining with Carlos Long for County attorney and Iaukea for sheriff. Tho situation Is regarded by many as pointing to almost a loss of party lines. Long's coming out as an independent candidate for county atttorney is re garded by most political observers as a result of the fact that two haoles wero on tho two opposing regular tick ets. Similarly where two whites, Von Holt and Trent, are opposed on the other tlckots, Beckley steps in as a Hawaiian candidate. In all this tho party managers nre at sea. There is so much seeming political dishonor that, as ono party leader put it, '-It will soon seem useless to hold conven tions or niako agreements." For exam ple, In tho minds of somo of tho dele-i gates to tho Republican convention, a part of tho price of the Lano nomina tion for mayor, was tho Long with drawal from the county attorney fight. Yet withm a week Long Is out "Inde pendent." Iaukea and Long will both havo tho Civic Federation and Anti-Saloon Lea gue support, according to street talk, though a prominent Civic Federation leader today spoke in favor of Wise for sheriff. Opinions differ as to.who will suffer by tho Independent candidacies. It seems to be the opinion of a ma jority of tho politicians that Iaukea ADMIRAL GEORGE C. BECKLEY AN NOUNCES HIS INTENTION TO BE AN INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE FOR THE OFFICE WHERE THE MILK AND HONEY FLOW THE DECLARATION MADE AT THE LUNCHEON TO MOOHEAU BASEBALL TEAM. Beckley Is not regarded very seriously as yet. The candidacy of Long has revived the race talk more than ever. Long's well known Intimacy with tho Kuhlo-Lane-Colbum clement, gives the mat ter an unpleasant appearance to many, and no man was over more bitterly asaslled for bad faith than Long Is be ing assailed now. "Long simply told Kuhlo and all the rest of the leaders to go to h- - I," said Chllllngworth In speaking of the atiornoy-s butting Into tho fight. Long's friends say that he has received Important pledges of sup port. At any rate he has revived tho race Issue and boomed It beyond prece dent. Republican campaign plans aro a good deal disturbed by the Illness of A. L. C. Atkinson, chairman of the Terri torial Committee. It appears to be worse than a temporary Indisposition, of a nature Indeed to threaten Mr. At kinson's ability to take any further part In the campaign.
