C BISHOP fi CO IF BQABD ACCIDENTS YESTERDAY. WAS DISASTROUS AT "WAlKIIO FOR SURF RIDERS THREE 1NJURED The dangers ot surf riding when tried by those who have but a funda mental idea of tne whttns and tricks of the waves, was shown yesterday at Walklki. Three fairly serious uccl dents occurred during the afternoon through collisions and at least one of those who met with misfortune will probably be marked for life. The surf was rather higher than usual yes terday afternoon and there were a large number of local riders out with their boards. To complicate matters the surf was rather peculiar, breaking In two directions which formed an angle at which the riders coming from Ewa ana Walklki directions met. Dr. Hand, of the Y. M. C. A. was among those to get tangled up and wns some what bruised. The manner In which the surf riders claim the entire beach or at least 'near ly all that part where there is little coral, to the exclusion of swimmers, is causing some little feeling at Wal klki. If a surf board comes rushing in through a crowd of swimmers, the latter are always held to blame. Un til recently tho board riders used to keep away from the smoother part of tho beach, but with the idea of "show ing off" the stunts which some are learning, Chey have now encroached on almost every part of the beach where bathing is really good, leaving only the coral strewn section for the bathers who have no boards and can not swim well enough to venture Into deep water. E F Entomologist Kotinsky was directed by the Board of Agriculture and Fores try to investigate and report on the sweet potato blight. Forester Hosmer reported the cost of collection of seeds by employees of the Board, for three months past, was $165 against 0S12 which it would havo cost to buy the same quantity of-seeds. Also he made a favorable report on the co-operation of plantations in tree planting, specially mentioning the Ho nolulu plantations at Aiea. Between one and two hundred trees would be given away for Arbor Day planting. A proposition to give a Territorial commission to Dr. Glazier, a veterina rian employed by the stock raises of Kauai, was left in abeyance until Dr. Norgaard, the Territorial veterinarian, was consulted. It was decided to remove the fence from the portion of the government nursery designated for a public park, and a proposal of Mr. Hosmer to sub stitute a woven wiro fence for the wooden one was rejected. OPEN LETTER TO JAPANESE. The people of the Pacific slope know that the Japanese question is purely industrial. It is not racial. Tho roots of the Industrial struggle between the meat-eater aifd the rice-eater strike deep and spread wide. From a recent magazine article. Oho! you clever little Jap, We know that you're a cunning chap; The way in which you won your bout With Russia's bear has brought you out And shown the world th'at you are bright And shrewd and just about "all right," Or would be hilt for one sad vice Instead of beef, you live on rice! This glorious country of the free! This splendid land of liberty! Invites to its wide-open door I iiuiue-scuiiing uiul's nuni every suuiu, i Jew, Gentile, Christian, Pagan, Hun, ! Slav, Pole or Arab every ono Can, of Its freedom, have a slice, That Is, unless they live on rice. Now, here's the trouble: rice is cheap, i While beef, you know is rather steep; Hence you can live on wages which j Would never make beef-eaters rich; So, people fear if they compete With you that they shall have to eat Your Rind of food, and 'tisn't nice To give up beef and live on rice. In other things they're sure they can Excell or mutvlt you, man for man; But this ono cloud their sky obscures Their stomachs can't compoto with yours: And so, somo earnest people say. Since you eat breakfast foods all day, They like you not. (Because the price Of beef Is more than that ot rice.) Christian Science Monitor. PUZZLED THE OLD FOLKS.
