ON YACHT HAWAII
"Ahoy on board the Hawaii!"
That will be tho hall to the big
schooner yacht In a fow weeks, when
she is expected to loom up In Los An
geles harbor from her long beat
across half the Pacific from Hono
lulu to take part In the Transpacific
ocean race to tho islands July 9. Com
modore C. V. P. Smith yesterday re
ceived a cablegram from tho race
committee of the Hawaii Yacht club
stating that the big racing schooner
had sailed for Los Angeles, expecting
to roach here within three weeks or
hotter with favorahlo winds.
Tho Hawaii is the product of tho
sporting blood in the Islands. She wus
built for the biennial race two years
ago by popular subscription of tho
Islanders. They are a patriotic col
lctlon and they easily raised over
$30,000 to produce the yacht which
they still believe will lift the cup
Every stick of timber in her was
grown on the islands and everything
on her produced in tho Hawaiian is
lands was used in place of anything
imported.
The craft, which caused much fa
vorable comment on this coast two
years ago because of her handBomo
and seaworthy lines, is in charge of
Commodore Wilder of tho Hawaii
Yacht club on her present trip, and
there will be no bungling in her sail
ing, as was claimed two years ago. i
She has a crow of export amateur j
yachtsmen and a few paid hands on
board who havo been trimming the
big yacht and sailing her week after
week to got her down to the finest
point of speed she can produce.
Two years ago tl.e Hawaii brought
up in tho tall end of tho 2230 mile
race to Honolulu, greatly to tho dis
appointment of tho island yachtsmen.
Tlioy still havo great faith In her,
however, as is shown In her entering
tho raco this year. They aro satis
fied that she was not given a fair
chanco and nothing has been over
looked to havo her In shape to make
this tho swiftest passago of any In
tho fleet.
She had just been finished in timo
for the raco two years ago when tho
tchooner Lurlino showed such a burst
of speed. Tho skipper in charge of.
her had ordors to take out about eight
tons of inside ballast when ho reach
ed Los Angeles and to place tho boat
on tho ways and scrapo her "bottom
clear of "Irish pennants." Tho skipper
did neither, causing her to Ioso many
miles in tho raco. To mako mattors
worse, the Hawaii was navigated in
such a manner that sho missed the
heavier breezes until sho was half
way to tho island.
Word comes from Honolulu that
sho will bo raced this year as sho
should havo been raced two years ago
and there is a strong feeling in

coast that she will lift tho cup. None
of tho entries so far appear to stand
with her in the long run, although
thoro may bo some surprises when
the race has ended.

carry and tho extra outstdo ballast
she will make a surprising run under
fair conditions.

feel that this move would be too great

tho San Franciscans to bo "sports."
Within the next few weeks there
will bo some lively times on the low
er coast among yachts entering the
raco. They will bo trying each other
out with short runs, tuning up to be
come hardened for the long trip and
stretching sails so that they may
catch every particle of wind In sight
during the race.

Sunday will be started at 1:30, tho
second at 3:30.
Barney Joy and Henry Chilling,
worth will officiate as umpires at all
of tho games.
CHAMPIONSHIP SHOOT.
This afternoon at five o'clock on
tho Kakaako traps, tho regular week
ly shoot of tho Hawaii Gun club will
bo hold. Harvey, Bowon, and Vin.

Harvey has won two shoots, Bowen

POLO PRACTICE.
This afternoon a number of as
pirants for tho Oahu polo team, will
mcot at Moanalua and tako part in
a practice gamo. A number of now
players havo signified tholr intention
of getting out and trying for tho team,
nnd if enough turn out this afternoon
two twenty mlnuto periods will bo
played.
Bob Shlnglo hopes to get out today
and try out his now ponies, that aro
understood to be very fast and used to
tho game.
Walter Dillingham will return next
month on tho Siberia, and will start
practicing at onco to get In shape
for the coming games in August,
It is understood that a number of
now ponies aro coming down on tho
noxt Lurlino for local plnyors, and
if they turn out to ho fast Maui will
havo to go somo this year to wrest
tho honors from Oahu
YACHT RACE NEWS.
Chairman L. M. Vetleson, of tho
Transpacific race committee, has re
ceived word from tho coast that tho
yawl building for Francis Smith, will
probably be completed in timo to en
ter tho race which starts on July 9.
If his yacht is entered there will
be seven in tho race. Vetlcsen stated
this morning that ho thouht the Ha
waii would make a much better show
ing this year than sYie did in tho last
race, as tho yacht has been relieved
of a lot of unnecessary ballast.
The Hawaii Is out fifteen days to
day, and her arrival is expected any
time now as captains coming from
the coast report strong steady winds.
GOVERNOR'S CUP RACE.
Three yachts have already entered
tho round tho Island yacht race for
the Governor's cup on June 25, and
It is possible that two or three more
will be ready In time for tho starting
gun.
Tho Gladys, Holone and Charlotte
C. have entered, and if repairs to tho
Kamehameha and Spray are complet
ed in time they will also be in the
race. George Renton Jr., may enter
his yacht if ho finds that he will bo
able to sail her.
The race will start on Saturday aft
ernoon July 25 at 3 o'clock, and
should he over by noon os Sunday if
good woathor prevails.
