waiian Gun club's challenge cup yes
terday afternoon oii the Kakaako
trails, making a score of 22 out of 30.
J. W. Harvey the club's crack shot
mndo 18 out of a possible 20. H. B.
Odell was third with 1G out of 28 and
C. White fourth with 16 out of 30.
This cup has been competed for
five times, Harvey winning two
shoots, Bowen one, W. M. Vincent
one and Major Long one.
According to the deed of gift the
cup must be won three limes by the
snmc porson.
In yesterday's shooting Harvey
made ten out of ten at unknown an
gles and missed two out of ten at
known nngles. Major Long made
eight out of ten at unknown angles
and fourteen out of twenty at known
nngles.

ACTOR WANTS FIGHT.
As soon as Henry McRno, owner and
manager of tve McRao Company,
heard yestorday afternoon that the
Jeffries-Johnson fight was not to bo
held in San Francisco, ho cabled the
following, message to W. W. Norton,
Sporting Editor, Examiner, San Fran
cisco. "Will you try and fix Jeffrios-John-son
fight. Honolulu a good place for
fight. Haye full authority to grant
permission. Dictate your own terms.
Please give matter your own personal

As soon as the wire was sent they
phoned to R. W. Breckons, United
States District Attorney, and asked
his opinion on tho matter. What
was said to them by tho Federal offi
cial will probably never be known,
but this much is known that Hono
lulu will not be tho arena for tho
battle of the heavyweights now or at
any future time.
Although the big fight will not take
place in Honolulu, Lang and Burns
will meet next Tuesday evening In a
15 round go at Aloha park. Burns
met Johnson two years ago in Australia-,
and was defeated by tho ne
gro In the fourteenth round. Seats
aro now on sale and by the time of
tho bout every seat will be taken.
BOTH MEN IN GOOD
PHYSICAL CONDITION
Optimistic reports emanating from
the Jeffries training camp at Howar
dennan, Cai., whether inspired or
otherwise, would seem to indicate, if
tnkon at their face value, that tho
man destined to carry the white
man's burden will round into good
shape by July 4. He now has been
In active training for over a month
and has tackled the heavy, arduous
work with an encouraging serious
ness of purpose.
But' disquieting (?) stories have
reached the public, meantime, regard
ing tho Ethiopian champion's lack or
willingness to plunge into the condi
tioning process.
Because of this speculation it was
suggested that Johnson be examined
physically to determlno his present
condition, and, if possible, the amount
of work necessary to send him into
the ring prepared for his test fight.
Dr. C. W. Plfer, the physician who
examined Jeffries on January 1, was
asked to assume charge of the tests,
which were conducted with the aid of
scientific apparatus and instruments.
Tho verdict of the physician follows:
"If Jeffries Is a Hercules, then John
son surely is a black Achilles, the
Roland whom tho black race presents
for combat with the Oliver of the
whites.
"If tho Caucasian Is physically per
fect It must be admitted in fairness
that tho black is equally so.
"Jack Johnson, In brief is a pri
mordial man, big boned, steel muscled
and Impressive capable, It would
seem, to grapple with a cavo tiger ot
tho first era or with his warclub to
stalk tho mighty prehistoric buffalo.

"Having examined Jeffries on Now
Year's Day, I roaly accepted tho op
portunity to comparo him with John
son. Tho tests were miich more se
vere than those faced by tho retired
champion, but I consider this fact neu
tralized by Jtho six months, difference
in time, It being reasonable to assume
that tho Californlan is In better condi
tion today than at tho tlmo I saw him.
"I examined Johnson both before and
after a spirited six-round glovo bout
also after ho had performed the 'dip'
35 times' on parallel bars, whereas
Jjffrles' solo exercise on tho day of
examination consisted in skipping the
ropo for three minutes comparatively
a light exerciso.
"The soverity of my last examination
Is indicated by the negro's high heart
beat, as recorded by tho stethoscope.
Desplto its rapidity of action, howovor,
the organ is perfectly sound.
"A summary of the results of tho
Johnson teat Indicates that: General
health Is excollent; heart heat Is rapid,
but powerful; lungs nro In good gene
ral condition, but Bomowhat clogged
by cold j expansion poor; kidneys per
fect. Thcro are not indications of
stomach disorder, as so frequently re
;wrted. "If the champion has dissipated,
there aro no signs as yet of Impaired
vitality. His muscle is snappy and
v-Iastic. His feet aro flat, but otherwise
O. K. Hands nro sound, not one knuc
kle being broken. Hones firmly knit.

NEW YORK, May 28. The prelim
inary boat races this year, the two
mllo affairs that annually cause so
much heart-burning: and confusion,
promise to give a good deal better
line than usual on the important re
gattas at New Lbndon and Pough
kecpsie. The most important of all
these early races, that between
Harvard and Cornell, is still to be
rowed,' and the critics aro bound to
reserve opinions until after tho meet
ing ot the two universities that stood
at the head of American rowing last
year. The race takes place this year
at Cambridge on Memorial day.
The navy takes part In no intercol
legiate regatta this year, tho hoped-
for permission to go to Poughkeepsie
not having been obtained. But tho An
napolis crow, a rattling good one
gave Harvard early in tho season ?
close race, and, beccomlng seasoned
in that trial beat Columbia. The vie
tory over Columbia, which was won
without much difficulty, was followed
up by a gruelling struggle with Syra
cuse, victory resting with tho middles
by the narrowest of margins.
Syracuse was third at Poughkeep
sie lost year, well beaten by Columbia
which crew gave Carnell a pretty
hard fight for first honors. Columbia
and Syracuso both have good crews
this yoar, excellent combinations for
speed and well fitted to row two-mile
races oarly in tho senson.
Thoreforo, if Harvard, rowing on
tho Severn, could boat a crew that
disposed of Columbia and Syracuse,
It Is reasonably safe to assumo that
tho Cambridge eight Is formidable in
tho extreme. It ought to bo, as a mat
tor of fact. It ought to ho a crow oven
better than tho suporb one that rowed
the heart out of Yale at Now London
