Phone 2295 63 Queen Street THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE FOR BATTLESHIP?.. Is the ultimate soluvlon of the speed and fuel economy puzzle to be found In the employment of ' gas producer or other forms of Internal combustion engines for naval use? This question Is one which naval architects and engineers throughout tho world are studying with intense application at the present time. Great Britain has tho courage of her naval constructor's convictions, and is going ahead with the building of a cruiser which is to have internal combustion engines. Tho Popular Mechanics for December contains a valuable resume of whot has been done in this direction bv t!u navies of the world, and accompanies It with a forecast of what mny be expected, A double pago illustration gives some idea of the economy of space In the adoption of the Interna! combustion engine to naval needs. That a complete change of the in terior and deck arrangement of a bat- tleship would bo possible is easily conceived. By tho reduction possi ble in its fuel.storago space, in the engine room, and the quarters for the engineering and ilrersom forces, apace would be given for Increasing the size of the magazines and for stowint aeroplanes and submarines, both ,.f which the battleship of the future may carry as part of its regular equip- ment GENTLEMEN'S CHRISTMAS. Special attention Is directed to the announcement of Silva's Toggery on the third page of this issue in regard to holiday wear for men. Every man who would be well dres sed should look over the lines at Su va's Toggery boforo making purchas es for the holidays. Flno Job Printing, Star Office. GROWTH OF TRADE IN PACIFIC OCEAN It is a long reach from tho Pacific to Berlin, but Kuhlow's German Re view and Exporter seems to have a pretty keen Idea of conditions out this way. The following from the Issue of November 2 Is interesting: Considerable interest has bee awakened in tho project of the Pacillc Hadio-Telegram Company, and par liamentarians and the press are giving the matter much thought and expres sion in tho Australian Capital. In the debates it is pointed out that the vast area of the practically unknown Pacific Ocean Is studded with islands and archipelagos of greater or lesser Importance, rich In many products gold, copra, becho de mer, pearls. nickel, phosphates, timber, fruits, rub- ber, rice, coffee, tobacco, etc. and suitable for growing others; that tho dormant wealth of these islands will bo developed; that the center of tho world's activity may be shifted from Atlantic to Pacific water at no distant day; and that four great nations, the United States, Great Britain, France and Gormany, are now firmly estab lished among tho scattered islands of the Pacific. Tho completion of the Panama Canal will bring the islands of the western ocean nearer to tho United States and to Europe as well. The giving of heavy subsidies by Ger many and France to steamships carry ing their Pacific trade evidences a de termined rivalry for the commerce of this ocean. The trade of FIJI, Tonga, the Solomons, the Cook Islands, and others is worth holding for what it is at present and for what it is expected to be. These arguments preface the con tention that the mainspring of trada is communication; that places geogra phically half as close to each other may be commercially half a world apart by reason of Imperfect cable communication and Infrequent sailings of slow steamers. It has been stated that Germany already has in hand a project to link her own islands by a system of radio-telegraphy, connected with the telegraph systems of the world through the cable at Guam. The British proposal, If adopted, is intend ed to connect even the remote groups of Islands, and, linked by telegraphy to each other and to the world, they would soon become faml'lar names in all markets. Australia would en deavor to hold and to develop this island commerce as its own. Fapu.x (British New Guinea)) is already a territory,. Norfolk Island is about to be created such by pending legislation. and the influence of the Australian commonwealth Is felt In other direc tions throughout the South Seas. By reason of geographical advantages the Australian markets would grow in im portance with the growth of the Pa cific trade, and in those markets the United States should strive to main tain an increasing share by providing bettor, faster, and more dependable communication than at present exist. 4 POINTED PARAGRAPHS (Chicago Daily News.) A man is down in the world when ho Is on his uppers. If you could have what you wanted. would you want it? It takes a contrary woman to like a man because she doesn't. The man who flatters a woman can make her believe almost anything. A quick way to get rid of your money is to run up bills and then pay them. Many a man heads a long funeral procession who never had much of a following In life. If some men didn't boast of their honesty the world would never know they had any. The quickest way to convince a eirl that you have good taste Is to tell her sho is good looking.
