NEW ASSOCIATION Tlio Hawaiian Association Football , League played the first round on the league grounds on Saturday afternoon, the Mailes beating the High School by two goals to one and the Iron Works and Punahou playing a draw. The 'ground was In wretched condition; the grass was a foot long In places, there were a number of bare spots 'and occasional hillocks to bo 'met i with. The grass was so long that when the ball lodged In one of the many extra heavy patches It hardly bounced a yard. Naturally this made the play very slow, but much harder on tho players and although nil four teams started off at a very fast pace, towards the end of each game they slowed down perceptibly. All teams exhibited the same faults; It was kick and follow on from start to finish, excepting once in a while, j whon a short passing bout would oc . initiated, only to fail through tho players being out of position. On the whole, however, the games wore interesting, and with an Improv ed ground and more attention paid to passing from foot to foot, the ploy should attract a far greater amount of interest than was manifested on Sat urday. There wero then only a few spectators, and these remained very quiet, tlie "barracking" so dear to the players' heart being noticeable by its absence. There was some considerable delay in starting the early match, which was set down for 1:30 but which did not commence until two o'clock. The Held wns not marked out when the teams arrived, but this was soon rec tified. The opening stages of the game between tho Mailes and tho Higli School wero slightly in favor of the High School, but there was so much loose and aimless kicking that first one side and then the other was rac ing up field after tho ball. A dozen chances of scoring were missed by both teams, corner-kicks being wasted times out of number almost. In defending the backs on both sides wore lavish In conceding corner-kicks, but as these wero un productive it did not matter a great deal. Corner-kicks should only bo conceded as a last resort, for with a good half and nippy forwards a" cor ner kick is a constant source of dan ger and often decides a hard match. The first score came towards the end 1 of the first half when the High School meha grounds on Saturday afternoon left forwards carried tho ball up the and won by sixteen points to nil, scor wing, and J. Ball beat McGill and put ,ng lhree tuochdowns. from one of In a splendid shot, which scored. ' The gamo was hardly in motion the second spell when th0 Mailes wero at tacking strongly and playing better football than they had shown earlier in. the game. Dwight made an excel lent run up field, but his kick into tho center was mulled by McNicoll. Then thrco cornors wore awarded to the Mailes in quick success and It was from the third that tho score was equalized, F. Balloy heading tho ball Into the net. Yeaman displayed ov er anxiety to chargo the ball when tho whistle was blown for tho kick out again, but tlio opposing center forward allowed Yeaman to charge, knowing that ho would bo sent back, and this iwas done, such a charge being illeg al. Tho second goal and the winning i one came as a surprise to both teams, 8,1(1 was dlIe to a spectacular run up ii ei oy m. uaney, wno took tho ball to within fifteen or twenty feet or tho goal before ho passed it to Yeaman. j who had only tho goal keeper (o beat, and this ho did, putting tho ball In the not, while all the rest of the teams were standing still scattered all over tho field. Play ended with the score two-one in favor of tho Mailes, In the second gamo play was of an oven more level character and both teams 'settled down to their play from tho kick-off. Tho Iron Works team pressed at tho start, but though they kept the ball In tho Punahous terri tory the shooting at goal was very weak, long punts going well over tho goal lino Instead of the ball being passed to tho forwards to glvo them a chance of scoring. Once In a while a long kick scores, but It is very sel dom indeed. More often success comeij by the halves feeding tho forwards, who are In front of the halves for that purpose. This particular point was il lustrated early In the gamo by thi? success which attended a passing rush by the Punahous, Catton getting tho ball when near goal and putting in h stinging shot from close quarters which put the Puns one up. Tho gamo was kopt up at a fast paco, nnd was remarkably free from broaches t of the rules, oxcept Inad vertent lapses which wero overlook- was, however, a slight ten- BAINS. LEAGUE HAS? SOLDIERS PLAY A E Yesterday, the Alliolanl soccer team was beaten at Fort Shatter to tho tune of two goals to one by the sol diers who play this game. The sol diers are making great headway and are being Inunduted with challenges at the present time. The team at Fort Shatter was selected from F G. and H. companies and put up .a very good game. In the first half of yes terday's match the students scored, Ben Kolohla netting the ball, but in the second half the s.oldiers twice broke through, Smith, of G company, directing tho ball into goal each time, Next Saturday it is probable that tho High School I'eam will play the soldiers, and other matches, for tho Fort Shaftcr boys 'aro being arrang- JUNIORS WON. GOLF SCORES iT VERY With the exception of Tom Gill's re markably fine score of 79 for i"he eighteen holes in the medal play com petition yesterday afternoon at the golf links at Nuuanu, play was of rath er a poor nature, scores ranging from 89 to 118 strokes for tho two rounds. Gill played a remarkably good game, doing the first round in forty and ilio second in thirty-nine. Gill's first round equals Bogey, while his second goes one better. The next best single round of tho day was a 42 made by Sinclair in the first round, but when doing the second nine Sinclair went all to pieces and took Go siVokes, which put him fifteen strokes behind the winner. Sinclair had an excellent chance of winning at the end of his first round, as he was In receipt of a handicap of 13 and was then only two strokes behind Bogey for the first round A round of 43 by F. H. Armstrong was the only oilier round worthy of mention, but Armstrong's gross score was ten strokes behind tho winner. By reason of a very liberal handicap of 27, M. Phillips Allied second place, and A. F. Judd, with an allowance of eighteen strokes, was third, complete tables is ns under: The to 13 P. 3 o P a Tom Gill 40 39 . 79 .. 79 M.
