San Francisco, June 10. i THE GOLUHDMH'S JACOB'S ADDED Tho chief point of Interest in tho Columbian at tho railroad wharf this morning wns when tho gangway would bo put out Instead of tho Jacob's ladder that dangled over tho side, and gave the only means of gaining and leaving the ship. It Is about ono of the most nerve-racking devices that has ever becomo associated with a ship. To make it worse it had a step missing near tho top, and to those on tho wharf this furnished plenty of amusement. Tho unspecting ono would work his way up the ladder, with tho wretched affair doing a hula movement with every step upward, and then sudenly near tho top he would find himself blindly feeling for tho step that was not there. Of course, It was all very funny to those on the dock, and all that sort of thing. That Eng. lishmen that their pleasures sadly, was fully demonstrated by the w.iv some of them expressed themselves In regard to tho missing step, tho ladder ilself, and the idea of not putting out a gangway. Tho Columbian got in a dny ahead of time from Paget Sound. Sho left there on June 11, and has for Hono lulu nearly 3,000 tons of merchandise which includes a big consignment of lludweiser beer. For Port Allen sho I has about 100 tons of cargo, about ' 150 tons for Kahulul, and about 100 at bay until sho ran away. Then ho fell pierced by the holos of his assail ants. When his body wns found ii wns literally hacked to pieces. The body was burled in an Iron casket am? was disinterred to bo brought over on tho Shermnn. It will bo burled at tlm Presidio today. Lieutennnt Rodney's widow and dnughter came over with the remains. It was three days afterward that Sergeant Ferguson wns murdered In the same way and close to tho snot where Rodney fell. Adventure With Shark. Chronicle, Juno IS. John C. Rin ;cn, who lives on Rnv strppt nat Hyde, had an exciting oxperience on tho bay yesterday which ho will re member for many a day. Rlngen went out in n small boat early in the morn ing to do some Hshlng, a favorite pas time of his, off the headlands abut ting on tho Golden Gate. It was shortly after nine o'clock when Ringen, who had come to an chor near a chain of reefs off tho Ma rin shore, felt his boat sudden'y up lifted and turned over. In an instant he was llounderlng in tho water. Just as he was about to reach for tho up turned keel of his boat ho was struck by a huge glidine bodv. and to lils horror he saw that he was side bv sido tons for Hllo.
