Fort and Quoon Sts., Honolulu. I'houe 1410. Geo, G. Guild, Gen. Mgr. ICool WITH o tt . 1 AQUATIC SPORTS BOOMIIG WITH PROSPECT OF ROWIIG CONTEST ilTH Interest In rowing Is growing dally nnd both the Myrtles and Ilealanls getting their crews into shape for the great contest of Regatta Day, this year's celebration, which promises to be the best in tho last decade. Tho Ilealanls aro not going to bo content with striving for the local championship. They have an ambi tious scheme on foot, nono less than to either Invite a Coast crew down for a race or, falling that, to send a crow to San Francisco to meet all comers. With those objects in view, the Healauls intend before very long to send to the mainland for a four-oared barge. No slx-oared barges are used by tho Coiist rowing clubs, which makes It essential that a four-oared boat be obtained both for training and racing purposes. Several members of the IlealanU Yacht and Boat Club have taken up tho matter with rowing men In Snn Francisco during visits to that city, and nil were keen on entering into the proposition of a raco to take place either here or in California waters. Tho Alameda Boat Club is consid ering tho matter seriously, and it is quite on the tapis that they may send a crew to Honolulu In the fall of next year to try conclusions with the Hea lanis The Healanls are sticking well to gether both In training and in social matters, and next Tuesday evening there will be a meeting in the club house at which tho matter of a re vision of tho by-laws with reference to honorary members will be taken up. Four "Blue" crews are at present in training for the coming September races In tho harbor, and their mem KEIOS LOSE Tho local nines, at least some of them, appear to have got the Indian sign on the Keios. Following their de feat by the St, Louis and All-Chinese aggregations, the Japanese yesterday afternoon succumbed to the. Native Sons, being whitewashed to tho tune of 4-0. As on Saturday, when the Kelos played and defeated the Portuguese nine after a close game, tho attend ance suffered from tho boycott of the local Japanese, many of whom lined up outside the enclosure of the ath letic park and influenced their coun trymen not to enter the ground. From now on it should be no trick to defeat tho Japs. They are "up in tho air," and something else as well. , Tho bubble of their sportsmanship (?) has been pricked. They have shown that they can't rise to the occasion I and stem the tide of defeat. When .they are winning, all is well. When luck is against them, however, all is off. This petty, internecine warfare Is insidiously weaUenlng sport here. All Right as Winners. When, the Keios were winning all along the line the Japanese went out in their thousands to watch their countrymen make monkeys of the for eigners. Then tho local players woko up and took a game or two and the Japanese couldn't stomach tho defeats a little bit, neither players nor spec tators, and tho cry, "No pololei um pire!" was raised, and the Japanese community refused to take Interest in further games. So much for tho situation in gen eral. Now for the situation in par ticular. How the Game Went. About three thousand spectators witnessed, the game with tho Native Sons. The Japanese were, as on Sat urday aftornoon, conspicuous by their absence. Tho Ilawaiis played the game throughout and thoroughly deserved their win. Tho Japanese wore palpa bly off their game, though at that there woro some brilliant individual plays by mombors of tho Kclo nine. Tho Ilawaiis opened their account in their very first Inning. lllco unloosed a three-bagger nnd scored on Bill Desha's sacrifice. In tho fifth the Ilawaiis thickened the gravy p. little more. ACAN o rx By H. M. AYRES. T bers include tho flower of the row ing talent in the Territory. Training for tho aquatic meet which takes place on the night oi August 12 in Bishop Blip Is also pro ceeding apace. By tho courtesy of the Ilealanls members of outside clubs are allowed to use tho diving apparatus of tho club'for practice for the. diving events of August 12. This is of great ben efit to them on account, of the Hea lanls being the only club in the Ter ritory to possess tho regulation A. A. U. diving apparatus. The Healanls expect their new shell to arrlvo by the S. S. Lurllne. The new shells for tho Myrtle and Puuneno crews aro expected to arrive early next month. There Is a striking difference In ap pearanco between the two types of boat. The Myrtles' boat Is a long, U craft, whereas tho Healanls' shell is a higher, shorter boat. Both clubs claim that their particular craft pos sesses peculiar advantages over the other. The Myrtles declare that the Healanls' boat looks like a scow, whereas tho Healanls maintain that the new Myrtle shell is too light for work in rough water. Way off on the waters of Kahului Bay the Puuneno crew Is working with might and main to wrest the rowing championship from the local clubs on Regatta Day. The Puuneneg will be making their debut in Hono lulu and may be assured of a rousing reception, whether they win or lose. Fresh blood Is what has been needed in rowing in this Territory for a long time past, and the determination of the Puunenes to train and enter a crew for the championship are appre. elated by all lovers of rowing and aquatic sports generally. AIO LOCAL CALIFORNIA AM JAPS BOYCOTT THE GAMES W. Desha beat the ball to first and stole tho next bag. Markham petered out at first. Chllllngworth made first on a neat hit and Desha scored on the Play. The game was tied up, sealed and ( placed in the Hawaii's strongbox in the sixth. Franco beat a bunt to first and Dreler followed in his footsteps, Franco, however, being nipped at thei next station. Raphael's two-sacker put Dreler in a position where he( could do his team some good. Lota did the needful, and both Dreler and Raphael ended up their Journeys on easy street. So was the game won and lost. Saturday's game botweon the Kelos and tho Portuguese Athletic Club was a very well contested one and ended in a win for the visitors by tho score of G-D. Only 1,200 spectators were present, tho Japaneso bleachers being practi cally deserted. Tho game was liko a funeral compared with the howling orgies of the past two weoks, though the Portuguese roso to the occasion In great shape In tho way of cheering tholr countrymen. Looked Like Jultters Again. Tho Kelos played very fair ball, though in tho eighth Inning, when a decision unfavorable to them wns given by Umpire Joy, it looked very much as if they were going to repeat tholr quitting act. It is very prob able that they would have dono so had tho - beon bohlnd instead of a run to tho good. Japaneso pickets stationed outsldo the Athlotlc Park worked atronuously T S to prevent tholr countrymen entering the enclosure, and tholr efforts were crowned with success. Tho Kelos woro hooted and howled at when they took tho field, Indeed throughout tho game the spectators lost' no chnnco to tell the visitors what they thought of their unsports manlike conduct In refusing to play out last Wednesday's game With tho All-Chinese. New Umpires. Bert Bowers and "Ginger" Mayno refused to act as umpires, and Bnrnoy Joy and Henry. Chllllngworth were pressed into service by the manage ment, both coming out of the some what unpleasant ordeal with flying colors. Tho Keios pulled down a couple in their first attempt. Kankl hit past short and gained first, pilfered sec ond, delivered tho goods on Mlyako's two-bagger. Koyama then scored Miyake. The Portuguest camo right back with a run. With two hands gone, Bushnell hit to center and made good on the catcher's crazy t,hrow. The sons of Portugal evened mat tors up .In the second. Two men were again make when a mistake by the saucy shortstop al lowed Brlto to go to first. He then graduated to second on a passed ball. Madeira's electrifying smash scored Brlto and the former stole third, his untimely retirement being occasioned by a piece of Innocuous fanning on tho part of Louis Soares. In the first half of the fifth tho Kelos grabbed two more. Sasaki walked. Kankl beat out a bunt and reached first. Miyake hit to first and Sasaki came In. Koyama was out at first and Kankl reached tho happy hunting ground. The Portuguese drew closer to their opponents in the soyenth, another run making them looni up as possible winners. Brlto got to first, Freitas sacrificed, sending Brlto up one; Soares hit to center and Brlto galloped home like a two-year-old. This made the score 4-3 and all things seemed possible to the Portuguese rooters. The Kelos put the Issue beyond doubt by notching their fifth run in tho eighth inning. Koyama connect ed with a soft one which traveled to the far end of the field and caused him to bo credited with a three-bagger. Takahama hit one right on the label and made first, Koyama, sad to relate, reaching the home plate a trifle In the rear of the gall. More Complaining. The Japanese team raised a big howl and put out their tongues at Umpire Joy, and for a few minutes it looked as if tho Japs were going back to their hotel without going through the preliminary of finishing the game. The big umpire was firm, however, and the Keios had to take his word for It. There was, however, some slight reason for the dissatisfaction of the Japanese players. Koyama was out fair enough, but Joy motioned him safe and immediately after corrected himself. Tho Inning was resumed and Fu kuda reached first. Ishlkawa also earned tho Initial mound and Taka hama scored on the play. Score by Innings: Keios. Runs 2 0 0 0 2 0 0 1 05 Base Hits 3)0111120-9 P. A. C. The penalty for the incompleted forward pass will be lightened, the ball being brought back to the point where it was put in play, Instead of where it left the hands of the passer, as was the case in 1910. o It is conceded that horse racing in Now York state is doomed by the practical death of the Glttins bill in the Senate. Miyake, at first, made a sensational stop in Hie second of tne seventh on Saturday afternoon, when Kusaka was throwing to catch tho runner. o Kankl played a star game for the Kelos on Saturday. He was crediteu with three base hits and acted gen erally as the live wire of the team. o The impeachment charges against Umpire Bert Bower will bo heard and acted on this evening In the office of C. F. Chllllngworth. o Thank goodness that the peaceful rowing season is nearly here. A baseball reporter has to be a war correspondent thes"e days. The Hawaiis were a well-balanced team yesterday and their stick work was a treat to witness. Barney Joy's umpiring on Saturday pleased tho crowd. A little raoro ot the fortlter in modo and a little less of tho suavlter In re on tho part of tho local umpires would do a great deal toward solving local baseball problems. o At Knplolani Park yesterday after noon tho Fort Ruger nine defeated tho Marines by the score of 8-3. La moro and Gilchrist were' tho battery for the winners, while Hlnes and Sin clair led tho attack of tho Marines. o Yestordny at Aala Park tho C. Y.
