A medicine that imparts strength or tone; a medicine that builds up, gives vigor and power. What is an ''alterative"? A medicine that alters or changes unhealthy ac tion to healthy action. Aycr's Sarsaparilla does all this with out stimulation. Ask your doc tor if a family medicine, like Ayer's Sarsaparilla, is not vastly better without alcohol than with it. i Aycr's Sarsaparilla Prepiretl by Dr. ). C. Aef & Co., Ltoatl, Mm., U, S. Malty Wolls, the Eng- IIhIi lightweight champion, tonight added to his llstle laurels by otitbox- lug and outfighting "Knockout" Brown, the Now York lightweight, in a ten- round bout before probably the largest crowd that over witnessed a pugilistic contest in New York city. Tho bout, the second to be held under the new boxing law, brought a crowd of prob- ably 11,000 persons to Madison Square Garden. Tho British champion was never In danger at any period during the mill- ing, and left tne ring unmarked, whllo "Knockout" Brown was bleeding about the mouth and from a cut under his right eye. Wells' cool and calculating dofense hud the American sorely puzzled, and he repelled Brown's attack from every angle. Brown conld not solve tho Englishman's left jab, which played about his face with lightning-like ra pidity and kept the American from do ing any damage at infighting. Seven of the rounds clearly be longed to Wells. Referee Charley White had to caution both men fre quently In the clinches The battle gave "Knockout" Brown's champion ship aspirations a severe setback. Popular opinion gave the battlo to Wells, but no decision was rendered, It was stated that the gate receipts totaled $30,000. Brown received 32 1 FIE POLO CUP T The trophy presented for the recent polo tournament by that good sports man, Mr. T. F. King, of the California Feed Company, and which was or dered from Shreve & Co. of San Fran cisco, arrived by the S. S. Sierra this morning and will shortly be on exhi bition. The trophy is of unusual merit, in deed It Is one of the most striking which has ever been offered for a local sporting competition. The cup is of sterling silver and stands twenty Inches high with a burl redwood pedestal. On one side is donlcted a scene beautifully executed and full of action of two polo players going neck and neck after tho ball. Above and below Is the Inscription, and on the reverse side will be en- graved the names of the members of the winning team. Just who will take the cun is nrob- lematical, and it is a pity that an out right winner of such a splendid trophy could not be. found. Oahu have withdrawn from the tournament and from present inuica- tions it is hardly probable that the 0 Fifth Cavalry will accept Kauai's In- , o vltatlon to play them for the cbani-j Johnny McCarthy obtained a ten pioushlp on their own ground at tho round decision over Anton La Grave, end of next month. Chronicle: Hanunorlng and beating Willie Ritchie on ho kidneys for tho greater part of twenty rounds last evonlng, Matty Baldwin of Boston was handed tho decision by Refereo Harry Foley. It certainly was Baldwin's fight In practically every round, and the only reason that he did not regis- tor a knockout as early as the twelfth was because ho Is woefully lacking tho wallop. Baldwin whipped In punches enough to put a heavyweight on his back, yet ho never even floored the local lightweight, The battle was a fast one, replete with many and oft-repeated Incidents that bore close relationship to the sensational. But the class was not there. Neither of them showod it. Ritchie was too young, too green for a veteran campaigner like Baldwin, and Baldwin was too mich worn out, too old, as it were, to win the battle by a clean knockout. The Boston boy did not make as good a showing a.i he did against Freddie Welsh that' evening two months ago, when many of the fans began to rave over him. He was not so fast last evening and he did not show such a variety of punches. If anything, Matty went back about fifty per cent in ou uays, wnicii is fast shooting down tho toboggan.
