For the llrst tlmo in Honolulu a rop roiontattvo of the Monro line of steam ers was soon when tho Lodoror ontor cd port and docked at tho Bishop whnrf at eight o'cloci:. The Lodorer Is twenty-three and a half days out from Newcastle, N. S. W and hnsVorty-three hundred tons Of coal consigned to C. Brewer & Co. The master of the Lodoror, Capt. It. J. Green, also is paying his first visit to this port. He states that, except for heavy northeast trades and a slightly mutinous crew, nothing worthy of note occurred to mar tho voyage. In latitude of about three de grees north he spoke one of tho Strath more line of steamers and they asked if the Lodorer had a doctor abroad, as the captain was 111. Unfortunately, tho Lodorer had no physician, and the vessels continued on their way with out stopping. The master and his steamer appear somewhat Incongruous the freighter being the typical sooty, broad-beamed collier, while the dapper young captain would seem to be more compatible with the bridpe of a Pacific liner and would doubtless shine most Immacu lately in such capacity. His first In quiry upon arrival was as to what was on at the Opera House and as to whether the hotels were "beastly" or otherwise. When iniormed that the Opera House was usually closed and that tho chief "theatrical" entertain ment furnished in Honolulu consisted in moving picture shows with vaude ville "stunt," ho was astonished, re marking, "They ought to get down lots of good things from the States, don't you know." As to the mutinous crew, the cap tain preferred to remain silent, but It was learned that some of the firemen became tired of their Job and pleaded illness, but persuasively salutary meas ures woro adopted and their Indisposi tion disappeared, though they contin ued to sulk throughout the voyage Officers of tho Lodorer hope that the unruly firemen will become so attach ed to tTie "Paradise of the Pacific" that they will decline to be detached therefrom. Thero will doubtless be a chance for several able-bodied fire- nion to go with the Lodorer when sho lonvos for Newcnstlo naxt week. This stonmor Is threo years out from Llvoriraol, having llrst gono to Now York. Out of Now York tho steamer carried petroleum to China, and from Chlnn sho wont with a mis cellaneous cargo to Australia. Sho then took on coal for this port, und will return for more ns soon as tho present cargo is discharged. Hor llrst visit hero, therefore, is probably but the forerunner of many in tho future. For Kahulul she lias C25 tons of cargo. The Lurline will oock at Hack feld wharf. "Sandwich Islands" Redlvivus. It has not apparently yet dawned upon the intelligence of the advertis ing writer of the Hamburg-American lino that Hawaii is no longer properly designated as the ''sandwich I' lands." Perhaps he knows better, but believes that tho old appellation sounds more romantic and appeals with grenter force to the imagination or the casual reader. At any rate, in the advertisement of the coming world cruise of the steamship Cleveland tho name "Sand wich Islands" occurs and "Hawaii" is not mentioned. This advertisement is now running in tho literary Digest and other magazines of tho mainland and presumably of Europe. Sweeping Naval Slip. Tho naval Blip is presumably dredged out to tho required depth, and this morning they are engaged In "sweeping" It, This is not done by means of brooms or brushes, nor Is it in any sense an attempt to put the flnishig touches on tho work, as tho term might Imply. It eonslsts merely in suspending from a barge a heavy Iron beam, allowing it to go to the proper depth, and then slowly drag ging It over tho bottom of the slip, for tho purposo of determining whether the proper depth has been reached over every foot of the bottom of the slip. When this work has been complet ed and the results checked up, tho naval engineers will bo able to deter mine if tho work has been don ac cording to contract, and, if so, the con. tractors will bo given a "clean bill of health" that Is to say, aftor tho cum bersome government red tape has been unwound, a voucher for tho work performed will bo passed In their favor.
