On Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 10, the i'emberton Mills at Lawrence, Massachu setts, iu whicli some 'J-VJ operatives are usually em ployed, fll with a tremendous cra-h, burying 7'W in its ruins. It was supposed at the latest intelligence, before our going to piess, that about 2U0 were in stantly ki!!cI, and about -0 wounded. Thousands j imineli:itely went to work to extricate the pxr suf- j frrTA who were ininrison1! under the ruins, and I whose groans were Leart-renderiDg. The see ties Leg- j gar all Jfscription. Some two or more acres of ground were p'led up with every description of ma chinery and the fallen ruin. Huge bonfires were turning to afford light to some two or three thousand persons working, as if for their lives, to rescue the unfortunate, many of whoui are begging to In? re leased from their tortures by death. Every few min utes some poor wretch is dragged from his or her prison, uttering the most heart-rendering cries while teing drawn out, with legs ami arms crushed or torn to piece.s. One man, who was shockingly uiaugled, and still partially buriel t.nder the brick", deliber ately cut his own throat. The whole city seemed to j be in a state of mourning. .Many of the friends ef the victims were running through the streets, and with frantic cries searching the ruins, frigid 4 with despair. Temporary hospitals were arranged! . i . . i : i I : t . 1 i lor iBOse i.iKtii out auve. none me ruins were being cleared away, a portion of the mills which was still stauding fell with a terrible crash, threaten ing death to a.11 who were still alive in the ruins. Gangs of men, with ropes, were constantly dragging at Luge pieces of the wreck which imprisoned so many of the poor victims. Some of the rescuers were killed in their attempts to relieve the sufferers. The building has never been considered staunch. It was built seven years since, and it was then considered a cham. Indeed, before the machinery was put iu. the walls spread tj such a degree that twenty-two tons ot etays bad to Le put in to save it from falling. To complete the horrors of this terrible catastrophe, a fire broke out, at Dine o'clock in the evening, in the rvius, speedily wrapping them in flames, aud burn ing li death the imprisoned victims. Surgeons came from all tptarters, and everything possible was done fur the relief of the rescued. The sights and scenes of the disaster were frightful. One poor girl, alive aud fully conscious, was dragged from the east end of the f ilien mass, with her left arm torn from the socket, aud her body aud legs awfully iVaagled. She was taken by her friends', but could not have survived long. In one pL ce the bodies of three girls were found lucked in each others arms, but -ite dud. They Could not I removed without mangling the bodies, aud being abandoned f r a time, the flames broke out before another attempt was made, aud all the three were burned. One IrUhinan was takeu out iinite unhurt, and his first act was to feel in his pocket, from whence he drew forth a filthy " dudeen," and seizing a brand front the Are, he lit his pipe and went his way. Next from the ruins we saw the dead body of a lad, and following him was borne a girl with one of ber ancles burnt to a crisp. She bail been Confined by one foot between two beams, and only by the utmost exertions was recovered. She was also takeu home by her friends A young girl was released just before the flames burst forth, and iu answer to a question, stated that the was unhurt. It afterwards appeared that ber eight arm was badly broken near the wrist, but iu the excitement of the moment and in the joy of deliver ance from a drtuJful death, she Lad not noticed the hurt. One woman was found with her head jammed be tween to heavy beams, and pressed so that it was f not thicker thau the thickness of a hand. It was a kotkeniog sight. One young girl, confined into a narrow hole, sur surrounded by broken machinery and ragged timber an I boards, succeeded in crawling out into open air, but when she emerged from the ruins, she bad scarcely an article of clothing on her person. Perhaps one of the saddest episodes of the whole calamity was the fate of Mr. Maurice IVuucr, who was an overseer in the mill. Iu the f ill he was 90 eahelle.l in the ruins that he could not beextricated before the fiie, and seeing the dreadful element ap proaching him, he, in his ag ny and despair, deter mine 1 not to be roasted to death, and o drew his packet knife au I cut his throat. He was, however, token out alive, and would have -urvived but for the self-in 3'icted iujury. Who, however, can juilge the nui-h and agony which induced the fearful deed .' Mr. A. 15. Winnie was in the fifth story when he heard the shaking of the building. He expected to be histantly killed, but went down with the falliug mass to the first flour, and walked out of the ruins un harmed. He was obliged to tear away some timbers to get ut, which he was enable! to do by his power ful exertions the wounded and imprisoned in the iciuity beseeching him not to move anything for fear the rubbish would crush them. Mr. liurredge. of Engine Company No. 4, took out a young girl from the rutns in a perfectly nude state, yet, strange to say. with hardly a scratch on her per son. He wrapped her in his overcoat, and carrie 1 ker hime, when, with gret presence of mind, she besought him to return to the sufferers in the ruins. Mr. J. H. Dana says : The first intimation roost of the eperatives Lad was the swaying of the walls of the whoI building. Then the falling commenced at one end, and the whole mass gradually settled; the major ity of the operatives running towards the silcr end of the edifice. The walls tell forward, but the roof fell in the shape of a V. allowing an almost unobstructed passtge cn eacli side of the mill along the basement, through which many escaped. Mr. A lams, the overseer, bei g in the basement, was overtaken by the falling fragments, while at tempting to escaje. an 1 was wedged between the tim bers. A saw was passed to him through the ruins, and he saw el until the nails prevented his going any farther. An axe was then parsed to him, and he got ainvseir out, not very seriously injured. I Before the building caught fire, a number r.f those : impri-'onel beneath its rums could be seen and con- j versed with, and drinks and refreshments in Borne 111- ; stanc-s were passed to them. The London Timr regards the dismissal of Count Wulewski as an indication that Napoleon intends to sustain the cause of Italian liberty against the l'ope ; and warns the Emperor that although he may count on the sympathy of England he must not exjiect her to join in an otiensive alliance against other powers. Fbam'k A pamphlet, entitled The l'uje and th: Conre, signed by M. de la Guerroniere, Lad leen published, and attracted great attention both in France and England, us it was believed to express the sentiments of the Emperor Napoleon. The pam phlet is written in a spirit of conciliation and com promise, and although it does not propose to take away the temporal powers of the l'ope, it advocates a curtailment of them, and urges that the Rotnagna should fcot be restored to the Papal domain. The object of this important semi-official paper is to de monstrate that while it is desirable to maintain the temporal power of the Pope, that aim can le best achieved iu curtailing his dominions by the excision of the Komagna, and by iustituitng administrative reforms in the remaining States. The opinions thus pronounced are understood to be those which will govern the action of the French delegation iu the Congress, and are regarded by the London Time as an adhesion to the policy of England.
